New to Credit Cards. Where do I start?

As the title states really.

I'm 29 years old and never held a credit card. I have never applied for one as I never wanted to rely on credit. I don't like having debts, so was a little afraid of having a card.

Now the time has come as I want to focus on building a credit rating for the future to enable that all important property purchase (eventually in years to come anyway)

Things to be aware of:

My annual salary is approx. £22,000 and been with the same employer for 5 1/2 years.

I have 2 minor loans ( £600 and £400) with Barclays. Never defaulted any payments. Both 1 - 2 years old.

Shamefully, I have always Previously "Lived" in my overdraft of £1450.00 . For 3-4 years or so I have popped in to the black for pay day then straight back out in the red for the bills the following day. (On a side note, This has finally been recovered and I'm now totally up to date. But would this have been hurting me?)

I never default any direct debits and have not failed any payment for over 5 years. So the overdraft is the only shame :/

So, Now you know a little about me, Have I supplied enough information for someone to suggest a suitable credit card?

My usage will be minimal and just as a means to build a credit rating.

Thank you for any contribution in advance.

Jason

    Hey,

Sounds like approaching your own bank might be a good idea. Failing that, someone like Barclaycard or Capital One both do good "initial" cards.
  • Think that might be an idea,

I'm with Santander on a current account. Looking online I can transfer to a 123 current account and get the 123 credit card at the same time. I'm guessing as it's my own bank I'm more likely to be accepted for a credit card??

Seems silly not to have the current account too as all my house hold bills come out and should earn me cash back.

    Bonus , 2 birds with 1 stone.

Thanks for your help. Think I'll pop in to a branch tomorrow when I get the chance.

    Thanks again

    Jason
