Faulty engagement ring from Ernest Jones

OP, as already identified the problem is the period of time that's passed. Your first issue arose after 6 months. So, now the onus is on you to show it's an inherent defect. For this you need the independent expert assessment.
When this issue arose with the frames on prescription glasses that I bought and I was CONFIDENT that the expert would side with me, I asked the vendor if they had a list of independent experts they recognised for this purpose, and if they would refund me the cost of the expert assessment if it was in my favour. At that stage, they just refunded me.... but you might at least go back to Ernest Jones and see if they have a list of independent experts. However, you have to ask yourself how confident you are that you'll win.
The sentiment behind any engagement ring is special, but you may not win the fight over a ring from EJ. Wear and tear may take less on their rings, it may be one of their lower end rings (you haven't mentioned cost), the setting/metal combination you chose may be more decorative than substantial. I'd ask yourself these questions before you proceed.0 -
The price of the ring was £1999.990

Im pretty certain that most people do not leave their engagement ring sitting in the ring box and only wear it on special occasions? A ring should be able to withstand wear and tear, well past 20 months, shouldnt it?
My engagement ring was from Ernest Jones, nowhere near the cost of yours, we got it in their sale it was reduced to £650.
I've had it for over 14 years and worn it almost constantly. I had no idea until recently that people didn't wear their rings in bed and took them off if they were doing 'anything'. I sleep with mine on, do the washing up with it on etc etc.
I do believe some ring designs are more practical and more robust than others. You really need an expert opinion as to whether your ring is not fit for purpose or if it's 'just' delicate and requires careful handling.
Either way, I'd not be happy especially for that price.
Will you update us once you've got it looked at?Herman - MP for all!

Did Ernest Jones used to be Ratners?
If so, what more needs to be said.0 -
The diamond chipped in my first engagement ring from Ernest Jones. I had not banged it as far as I knew. It ONLY happened practically after the ring had been away for 'maintenance' as part of their diamond gurantee package. The diamond was guaranteed for 10 years.
At the time I didn't really know my rights so basically went in all guns blazing after taking it to another jeweller for assessment. Anyway, they replaced the ring with another of same spec diamond. I realise now that I was probably lucky that they just changed it without me actually producing the assessment details from the other jeweller. I was however, utterly convinced that it only happened after they had messed around with it.
Since then, DH sister AND brother's fiancee have both had issues with rings purchased from EJ.
I wouldn't use them again.0 -
