Questions about scrapping a car to an Authorised Treatment Facility

I'm thinking of scrapping my 2002 Reanult Clio to an ATF. Can someone please answer a few questions:

The car won't start so the ATF will have to collect it. The nearest is about 16m. Will I get any payment at all because of this? Or could it go the other way and cost me? I'm in the South East (not in London).

Will it make any difference that it has a full tank of fuel (approx £35 worth)? Not interested in syphoning it.

When scrapping a car, is it acceptable to take a few bits off before scrapping? My partner has the same model clio so I wouldn't mind keeping the bulbs and wing mirror glass. Also on this note is it worth me keeping and selling the spare Continental wheel which is unused? I don't have the space or know-how to completely break it up.

I know a lot of people sell knackered cars on ebay for spares and repairs but I don't want to do this because of the long list of problems with the car (e.g. bad case of mould throughout) and I need to get rid of it within a couple of weeks. I also don't want to use any company other than the government ATF.

To clarify an ATF is an Authorised Treatment Facility which appears to be a DVLA/Gov approved scrapyard that won't let the car end up back on the road.

Thanks

Put the car on ebay as spares or repair, people expect faults when advertised like this so should sell easily. If you are selling to a scrappy you must get an end of life cert or you can get in trouble with the DVLA. By getting a scrappy to collect the car you will get less than if you delivered it yourself. Buy a syphon pump ( couple of quid from halfords) and save your fuel before you get shut and cash any tax in.

By the way, what is an ATF? It's a testing station isn't it?

    I used

    http://www.cartakeback.com/

Got £130 for the fiesta , the web site says the car has to be on wheels , lorry has winch so the car can be a non runner .

Take as much trim off as you like , keep the spare wheel
Fuel is up to you , they won't give you any extra for it.

They do all the paperwork and will inform the DVLA
I also don't want to use any company other than the government ATF.

The big companies are all regulated by the government and are very professional, one web page and then they arrange a time to suit you .
Have been very happy with the service.

Yes they will still pay even if they bring out their tow truck. Will be less than if you delivered the car yourself.

You won't get anything for the petrol.

You can take bits off, but the scrap yard might want to know first as they will be hoping for a complete car they can strip for spares. The more you remove the less they will pay.

    ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid?

    Authorised Testing Facility?

Some may charge/give you less for tyres as they may have to pay to have them removed/recycled.
    £5 - £10 per tyre?

Mates scrapped a few cars and he used to drive/tow them to the metal recycling place and take the wheels off.

Thanks for the info. Sorry for the confusion. ATF = Authorised Treatment Facility (DVLA approved scrapyard). Some info: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/waste/143462.aspx

eBay is not really an option for this car, even if it was repaired to running state, the other problems would put people off (mould throughout and crumbling steel in the engine bay).

Thanks for the "takecarback" suggestion. I am weary of using a company like that because of them turning up and knocking the quote down over different problems. The terms on that site says they can do that.

Has anyone used an ATF before?
  • List it on eBay as spares and repairs with a list of all the faults. It will sell and you will get more than CarTakeBack offer for collection.
  • personally i'd take the mirrors, lights, radio, etc etc off

    they'll sell for 20 each

then look in local paper for car scrap men, they only weigh em in for scrap

Mate sold a total wreck of a vauxhall nova on ebay. It was so rotten he said i wouldnt put a strap or chain on to winch it onto a trailer.

Yet it sold for more than he expected, Which was a fair bit more than scrap value.

The guy looked and winced yet paid the full bid price and took it away. Mate was expecting him to say no thanks or haggle the price.

He travelled about 100 miles to pick it up also.

I have used 'takecarback' without problem. They collected the car on the day/time as arranged & gave me a cheque for the full amount as promised. I got more through them than the same scrap yards were quoting directly!
