My 7yr old DD is also on the 2nd centile.... but she's not being monitored, it hasn't really concerned us, we've just gotten used to the fact that she's tiny..... I'm now worrying that we should do something about it!

It was us who initiated getting him checked at from the age of 2 (he had also had other developmental problems - sight, speech & walking), so due his other problems we were quite cautious over his growth too.

He has grown into a normal, healthy boy, who is very clever, sensitive and very dramatic!

As his bone age is approx 18months behind his actual age, they are now checking that puberty happens and not too slowly.

As we had dealt with other issues, that is why we continued to have him checked out - mothers intuition is a marvellous thing - if you have a gut feeling regarding your DD's growth go with it - if not I'm sure she'll be absolutely fine.

My advice was just that if there were concerns, not to leave it too late.

  • i've got two children - my ten year old is tiny with sticky-out bones and my toddler is a giraffe, and chunky. i used to worry that i wasn't feeding my tiny child correctly, but his weight is usually almost okay for his height. he really doesn't look okay though, he looks ill and far too skinny.

we saw a dietician when he was younger (he didn't grow for a couple of years, and never ate) but he's okay now, quite healthy.

when baby roo had his 6 week check the GP suggested a diet! she didn't even measure his height though, and the health visitor put my mind at rest by showing me that his height and head circumference were at the top of the chart, in proportion to his weight.

i've looked at the BMI charts posted by natalie and both of my children have average BMI, so that's put my mind at rest because i was starting to worry again about my eldest being so thin.

off topic, but babyroo is 21 months old and i'm having to buy a new pram because his head is above the headrest on most prams! he's the height of the average 3 year old (off the chart and looking at being at least 6ft 6 as an adult). he's also got a rugby player physique and i'm wondering what to do about nappies, he's already in size 6 and they don't get any bigger

if you are really worried about your son then see a GP. a few of my relatives are on growth hormones and i think age 11 is when they start. i don't know if there's anything they would do about a child who is very skinny though, advise about diet perhaps.

Hi my son aged 7 is 5 stone 3, he has quite a big tum and he struggles to find trousers that fit, what is normal for his age?

    Kyle
  • i'm no expert but i think lots of different shapes and sizes are 'normal' for kids, we're not all identical as adults so variations in children don't necessarily mean there's a problem. good luck with finding elasticated adjustable trousers - they're the ones ones that fit little roo at the moment!

what is normal? what you have to ask yourself is, is he healthy, can he move about without being out of breath etc, if he is fit an healthy then he should be ok
