Cheque from sky

I have just received a cheque from sky for £37.43, dated 1st April 2013.

Thing is I have no idea why.

I used to be with sky, but left around 18 months ago.

It appears to be a statement from the subscriber management centre, but the number is 0870 ........

Has anyone else received one?

Is it legal to cash, it has my name and address on it?

did you pay a month in advance
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

My Mother has also had a similar payment from Sky, albeit straight into her bank account.

She has never even been with Sky. Most strange. I had a live chat with a CS rep who has promised to look into it for me and provide an explanation.

Where they have got her bank account details from is anyone's guess.

There has to be something she has forgotten to tell me as things like this don't just happen.

The only link I can find between my Mutha and Sky is the impending takeover of O2 Broadband, of which she is a subscriber.

Same amount as well, I think.

I take it Sky office staff didn't take the Easter Monday bank holiday? Given it was also April Fool's Day ......... ;)

Most likely a credit from your last bill. Sky cannot credit your month in advance back for phone and bb ahead of time so usually ends up in a credit on your last months billing.

Call up and check on the standard customer service number with your postcode and house number if you are unsure.

Another thing to consider ... last week was the end of the financial year, so maybe Sky were clearing out closed accounts so as to set their books right?

Managed to track someone down, they think it was something I paid and they have only just got round to returning the money to me.

I didn't remember overpaying, but I'm not complaining.

    Thanks for replies.

Yes I have received a cheque this morning and I finished with Sky years ago. I had BT Vision Sky 1 and 2 last September but BT have finished that now. I will bank my cheque.

Ofcom said in 2010 that in its opinion "industry best practice should mean that all providers refund customers the outstanding credit they are owed automatically, and without any further action needed by the consumer".

They identified Sky, amongst others, as one of the providers that didn't do so.

MSE has also covered this issue- for example:

Sky told Ofcom that it writes to customers 45 days after cancellation, informing them of any credit remaining and how they can claim it.

Could it be that Sky has reviewed some credits against the procedures, and determined that a refund should be made?
