Can definately recommend the Air Cadets - my son joined at 15 years old and hasn't looked back - he's going to do his Gold Duke of Edinburgh this year having already completed his Bronze and Silver last year. He's flown a glider and had so many different experiences that he wouldn't have had without the ATC.
  • Have you asked him?

Just want to say well done to you all (hope I don't sound patronising)

There are some clueless people on here too, they obviously have never had to deal with things like this.
Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool

  • another vote for cadets here, I was an Air Cadet, ES in Sea Cadets, he is 16 and loves it so much he is hoping to join the navy

He is small & slim & not aggressive at all.
My first thought, Newbury, HORSE RIDING!!!

And what about Ultimate? (Don't laugh, that's Frisbee to you and me ...) I couldn't penetrate their website to find a list of clubs, but I believe there is one nearby.

Explorer Scouts. They do rock climbing, archery, rifle shooting, caving, abseiling, hill walking etc.
The best bit is that they are encouraged to create their own program so he would have an input into what they do.

How about something that isn't targeted at getting an adrenaline fix, but more to increase his feelings of self worth in a different direction? It must be hard going to feel you have to live up to such a hard dad, maybe it would be worth encouraging some other area of his personality to blossom. I'm thinking about something like volunteering to work at a local animal shelter, it's by no means glamorous cleaning dog crap out of cages but most kids like animals and it would certainly get his feelings involved in quite a different direction.

Hi thanks for all your suggestions, I'll pass them on to DD, I'm sure there is something he'd like to do.

Drag him out for a run.

    Running saved my mental health.

And it doesn't go well with smoking etc, so if he gets into running he'll need to pack that in.

Sorry to have to correct you but a CAF (Common Assessment Framework) is for young people and children at the tiers pre social work intervention. As is a child looked after it may be that this sort of thing is discussed at his looked after review

One of the reasons I qualified my reply is that in my experience, it is used differently in different authorities. I have definitely had to use CAF in very similar situations to the one described, and have definitely had to use it to get help for LACs. It is very difficult!
