Car Size Relative to Family Size

Hiya

I am asking this in the families section, rather than the motoring bit as this question really is about family size.

I am expecting baby number three later this year. We already have two children who are 8 and 5. They are both in booster seats and the elder still has about 5cm to grow before he is legally allowed out of his (although for safety reasons I am keen for him to stay in his seat longer).

My concern is that our current vehicles will not cater for 2 booster seats and a baby's car seat.

Please can you tell me what kinds of vehicles you have that cater for the same needs as we will need.

Many thanks

picasso/megane will fit 3 children in seats as far as I know, but TBH you'd be better to look a bit ahead if you can afford it and get a 7 seater eith a small one (zafira/touran) or a proper 7 seater. This will allow space for all the clutter that you will need and, crucially for us, to put all 3 far enough apart not to hit each other during usual travel:rotfl: also allows safe transports of friends etc ( i carry a spare booster as I am a car seat freak even though my 8yrold is only 3cm below the magic height, she will stay in her high back booster as long as possible for safety sake).

We've got a VW Touran with 3 kids, aged 13, 11 and 3. There's plenty of room in it.

I've got a Grand Scenic (2 pop up seats in the boot) that fits my 3 kids (7,5 and 2 ) safely in their seats. The extra seats in the boot are fine for older children but I think the seatbelts are not positioned well enough for younger ones.
We didn't get a bigger car straight away though, as we found buying new booster seats (narrower ones) was a much cheaper option!

If you don't mind me asking - where did you get narrower booster seats from?

It was just a case of going to Mothercare and other shops and trying them all in the car! I think we found the britax rock a tot baby seat fitted the best out of the baby carriers, and I think the britax boosters were narrower than graco. This was a few years ago though, so designs may have changed. A lot depended on the shape of the back seats and position of the seat belts, but there was definately a difference in how they all fitted.

I understand that you still want to use a booster from a safety point of view but legally you don't need to - if there are already 2 children in the back seat using appropriate child seats and there's no room for a third seat then it's legal for a third child to just use the adult seat belt...

Um, i am having the same problem, have a 5yr old, 3yr old and twins on way. MPV for me i think!! (Still will only leave 1 spare seat and not much space for buggy/shopping etc-hubby keeps saying we need a minibus instead!)

Clare have a look at the Toyota Previa (also called Lucida or Estima) - it's an a 7 or 8 seat MPV with boot space :) we're buying one soon as I'm pg with #4 and need boot space for camping stuff for holidays :)
