    Hi ey up,
It isn't dry rot, the OP's are quite right that it shouldn't have been sold and the quality of timber these days is shocking
I can't tell you exactly which wet rot it is (the type doesn't matter), it might be the beginnings of something called fibroporia valliantii which is a wet rot that does an impression of dry rot or should I say has similar characteristics to dry rot :)

It ought to be changed if only to teach the timber merchant a lesson, I'm assuming you didn't buy it as 'low grade' timber.

You could actually just clean all that off and use it, assuming it's going to be used in a relatively dry environment.

Wood rots must have 3 things to thrive, moisture, oxygen and a food source (i.e. the wood) remove just one of those and the rot dies.
Though if were going to be nerdy, dry rot (there is only one dry rot) when starved of moisture will to all intents and purposes will die and look dead, but it actually goes into a state of hibernation, if moisture is reintroduced at some point in the future it will start up again.

    Good luck with it
    :)

hi dampdaveski, thank you very much for your reply.

And thank you to everyone else who responded also.

the timber is to be used in a loft space so am really in two minds whether to scrape off and let dry or send back. joiner is saying don't risk it which I suppose is best option. just to explain, joiner, a relative, was not involved in this job so I didn't talk to him first. lesson learnt! anyway, the timber wasn't bought as low grade. I simply asked what they recommended. I have used them before and everything else has been fine.

I will report back in after I have spoken to them tomorrow. they have a longstanding name locally and I want to give them a chance to have their say before I consider whether to name and shame.

Titter titter 'tribute rot' :D i'll have to remember that one

If you have a wooden leg you might be susceptible to it ;)...eventually!!

If you have nothing better to do (like plucking your nose hairs) have a look at the wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibroporia_vaillantii

    Now where's my trimmers....

    Hi all,

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to all those who assisted. After a second poor batch was brought yesterday I declined the offer of a third batch and returned the lot for a full refund. To be honest the yard have been pretty reasonable about it and very apologetic. I have had several orders from them previously without problems so I am hoping this is a one off.
