Do not ever bank with santander

I got £110 of missed direct debits refunded, I was told it is only a once in a life time deal for each account.

Debits were my fault as i thought, when i put money in after the debits where due it would pay them off and also the people who i owed money to.

Nice chaps explained the money i payed in would only cover the money owed to the bank and not the debits

After checking my history with the bank and talking to his line manager he offerd to refund all my debits for that month.

I have also had bad dealings with customer service as well, but they are better than RBS and TSB who always stuffed up my online payments (paying who ever i orded from 3 or 4 times then leaving me hanging while they sorted it out)

The point is, they did not know the law and refused to discuss it. I am not impolite or obnoxious, merely extremely frustrated with the inconsistency and inaccuracy of their information. At no point was I anything other than patient or polite. The only time I encountered outright rudeness from them was the idiot on the door of the branch today telling me the first available appointment was November (an obvious, silly lie), but I have to say, the rest of the time was just the frustration of wildly differing advice. I do not believe it is good practise to refuse to let a customer speak to a manager on the phone either.

From advice I got here and elsewhere, I am fairly sure of the law on these matters now. The problem with Santander is that they are not. Pretty shocking for bank staff.

You might be surprised to find that not many bank staff have legal training. What particular law did you expect them to know about ? Most banks have their own legal department who would deal with legal queries. What was your query about ? If you're not going to say, there really is no point in continuing with your post.

Banked with Santander (and A&L before that) for years and never had a problem - but then I don't [STRIKE]fall for scams[/STRIKE] sign up for things that I don't understand the T&Cs for.

Good for you. However, that's irrelevant. What IS relevant is the law. Santander does not abide by it.

Anyway I've said my piece. Now off elsewhere to spread the message. Santander may not care about me or the law but at least other people should be aware of it.

Details of the issue and the 'law' that you think is on your side would help get more constructive replies.

Otherwise its just a fishing contest.

And what law exactly is it that they don't abide with? As meer53 said, frontline bank staff are not legal experts, so how would you expect them off hand to know exactly what should be done for some obscure situation.

I sense that you are one of the population who can't take responsibility for your own actions and expect everyone to hold their hand and nanny them.

Santander won't give a toss that you have closed your account.

And if all you are going to do is go around moaning without providing facts then no one will treat you seriously.

Which law are Santander not abiding by? If you are sure that they are breaking one or more laws, you can take them to Court and if the Court agrees with you, they will have to pay a steep fine, and may be even get shut down.

Assuming you have exhausted the Santander complaints process: had you considered taking your case to the FOS? If not, why not?

Yes, I'm sure messages such as "Do not ever bank with santander!" and "Santander do not know the law and will fob you off" will go down well, just like the posts I see on quidco and other sites that say "Santander made me £6000 overdrawn!".

Spread as much as you like, but the reality is that you'll just go down in history as a Santander basher and people will ignore you, as you don't even say why you think they are so incompetent (apart from "they don't know the law and I do!").

Did you ever raise a formal complaint? I would assume not as it seems all you did was argue with branch staff and demand your account to be closed, which they seemed to have done without issue.

So just another santander bashing thread that will be quickly ignored.

I'm sure the "you all work for Santander" accusation will soon come from the OP.
