I'm trying to open a new cash ISA with Santander and transfer my old Halifax 12/13 into it.

I have got to the bit:

"Opening your account
How are you saving for this tax year? *"

Options are:
- Send in a cheque from an account in my name.
- Move money from my Santander Savings or Current Account
- No new savings

Selecting the top one asks "How much will you open your new ISA with? *"

Is it the top option and the amount is the whole amount in my 12/13 with Halifax?

EDIT- I'm having problems with this, I know it's been a week, but when I tried this the first time din't work thought I would leave it a few hours as there may be a problem with their site, then laptop had problems.

Anyway I'm selecting "Send in a cheque from an account in my name."

Then entering the amount of 18,237.31 and it comes up with:
Please check your entry where ever you see a red asterisk (*) as some of the details you have entered are incorrect or missing.

This is for the amount, why is this any ideas?

I opened one of these earlier (not an existing customer).

I just selected the 'cheque' option. Application form was submitted and stated it would take 3 days to open the account. I checked my emails to find confirmation that the ISA had been opened! Sort-code and account number provided.

    :T

With that email you'll get an ISA transfer form, just print it off, fill in the relevant details and send it off.

Because I got my sort code and account number I also managed to transfer this year's allowance via faster payments.

    :)

    Me too.

Had £2500 in a non-ISA so just lumped it straight in.

Bumping thread, instead of creating a new one, having problems, I have edited my original post.
  • Hi,

can you not just open it with £1, then when set up transfer in, I think the reason you can't open with a £18237 cheque, is because you are over the limit for new money.

Why are you saying you want to deposit 18,237.31 by cheque, when you want to transfer your Halifax ISA? Do you know that you have to fill in a transfer form? http://www.santander.co.uk/csgs/Satellite?appID=abbey.internet.Abbeycom&canal=CABBEYCOM&cid=1237836201044&empr=Abbeycom&leng=en_GB&pagename=Abbeycom%2FPage%2FWC_ACOM_TemplateA1

You cannot deposit more than £5,760 of new money in any one tax year.

Just tick the "no new savings", and follow the proper transfer process. That deals with your transfer.

You need to understand what happens with any new money that you might want to deposit. Read the information on their website and come back if you don't understand some of it.

No no no no -- do not pay in any new money, not even £1, into the ISA before you fully understand what you 1) want to do, and 2) know whether this can be done.

The transfer can be done without paying any new money in, see my earlier post.
