Should stating the salary/salary range with a job advert be compulsory?

    I have always put in my CV/job application the salary I'm on and that I'm not prepared to take a new position which pays less. This means I dont waste the company's time and they dont waste mine.A company will try and get the best person and pay them as little as possible.

    Yeah I think the point is that it can take hours to apply for a job properly, as you should be tailoring each CV/application to the role. So it's a complete waste of time if you do that and it gets binned when they see you want £20k more than they are offering. And then - you get those that think if they offer less you will accept anyway so will continue until an offer is made. By then you have psyched yourself up so much it will be a huge disappointment when the offer is fair below what you need to move.

    How much easier to just put the salary range eh?

    I'm finding this frustrating also, I applied for a job a few weeks ago where they stated the salary was £9k-£20k. A fairly big range between the two figures! When I emailed asking what the salary was likely to be within that range they didn't reply so I didn't take my application any further

    But that way you ARE wasting YOUR time - by spendin time on the application for a job where they think that "competitive" is half of what you are on now...

  • I think I agree with your sentiment that it wastes peoples' time if you spend the time enquiring (or worse still, applying) only to find out it's completely out of your ideal range.

    Stating a salary band at least gives potential applicants an idea of the level required - but then some companies may argue they'll pay much more for the right candidate.

    How do people know whether they want to apply if the salary is not applicable to their range? You have contradicted yourself there!

    I meant that people can (and should) ask for salary details in their first communication without actually applying for the role.

    Not always possible as sometimes there is no contact details for the company/person responsible for advertising the job - on some job sites, just an online form to fill and send.

    I really fee that "above NMW" and "competitive" should nt be allowed. Salary range with "depends on experience" is fine but not "competitive" with no figure at all

    Lots of companies will not tell you and or respond or just say its competitive

    They would not advertise salary without a specific job title so why are they allowed to advertise job title without specific salary?

    I totally agree I think they should at least give a realistic idea of what the salary is likely to be. It is a waste of everyone's time to apply for a job that you would never be able to afford to take. Employers must have a rough idea of what they can afford to pay for a position when they advertise and it would take seconds to fill in a box with a rough estimate of salary.
