Should stating the salary/salary range with a job advert be compulsory?

Just wondering...
I do have a job but really looking for another job, obviously with a higher salary.
Looking through some adverts I find it really annoying when no salary/salary range is indicated.
Especially since I have applied for such a job with "competitive" in the "salary" space only to find out they were paying... £6.70 per hour. This was the kind of job I was getting 43k pa 2 years ago so.. quite surprising what THEY considered as competitive
I only found out when I was called for an interview and asked straight what was the salary range - and was told "everyone starts at the same rate of £6.70 per hour as they have to prove themselves"
Ermmm no thanks, refused the interview of course (good I asked - otherwise would have wasted time and money to attend one).
Do you feel a salary/salary range SHOULD be advertised with every job?

If they were honest and not trying to get people for the lowest pay possible then they would advertise it. Most do and some do not.gettingready wrote: »Just wondering...

Like you say I see MANY jobs saying competitive and when you hear back they are no way near that as like you some are paying what I was paid 10 years ago in the same industry.
It should not be compulsory but it surely attracts more serious candidates if their were to be open about the range at least. Saying like between £25-£30k depending on experience. All jobs have a budget for the role and know the going rate so no excuse reallyWe’ve had to remove your signature. That is what I mean - they do know what they are happy to and prepared to pay so why not say it in the advert?
I guess it must be that they are offering a NMW or very close to it so really no point wasting time on applications, time off current work to attend an interview and pay for travel there and back.
The woman who called me for that "competitive" (£6.70 per hour) interview became quite aggressive when I told her what I was paid for a very similar job too and declined their interview offer.

I asked once about a 'competitive' salary once when I was first out of work & they said it was paying 18k. In the same industry similar companies are paying 10k more. So I asked how they thought it was competitive - they never replied! Then I saw the advert for the same job advertised twice over! We’ve had to remove your signature. I would always call and ask what their expectations of 'competitive' would be.
and yes I do think it should be compulsory to state the salary range. Otherwise how can people even begin to assess whether it is worth their time. It wastes everyone's time when it isn't expressed at the outset.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -
Couldn't agree more

There is always someone who will apply for any 'ol job who will be willing to do it for any 'ol pay and just be grateful to have work. Thats who these recruiters rely on. They will get what they pay for

Sometimes the 'lead person' makes this decision, without understanding all the requirements of the role. This is normally a lesson learnt after spending months training someone with the brain intelligence of a fish, for them to still not understand the basics.
I don't apply if a job doesn't have the wage advertised - after all, we ain't working because we love the job (in most cases). If I got offered a role for 2k more than what I'm on now, I would leave for it. Business is business!0 -

No it shouldnt becompulsory however it is up to people whether they want to apply or not.
Personally I get contacted fairly often by recruiters who have seen me in linkedin etc about roles they are offering. Almost all advertise as 'competitive' salary. Very first questions i ask when I respond are:
1. Please send the full job description
2. What package are they offering including actual salary figure.
Any that try the 'competitive salary' line again are blocked.0 -

How do people know whether they want to apply if the salary is not applicable to their range? You have contradicted yourself there!Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0
