Switch it off at the mains.... it is far too power hungry on standby, other than that , use your iPad to be a remote remote control. Watch anything on it on your PC/iPad/tablet nope, they depend on you internet connection. Copy your recordings to your PC/iPad/tablet no chance. I could go on but you may presume I am not a fan.... oh and I have one and a sky subscription too(for the footie, golf and ATR). Should have got a Foxsat HDR instead unless you need the aforementioned, it is as bad as Apple with it's walled garden, oh and that is not a swipe at Apple either just an observation.

Is it connected to your router - you can then go the On Demand section in the TV guide and stream or download to your planner. The other functions are similar to a 'normal' recorder - pause/rewind live TV, set reminders & record programmes and series from the TV guide at the press of a button etc. Had mine a week, so still going through all the features - if you find anything mind-blowing, please let me know....

it's been a while since I succumbed to Sky and am impressed so far.

in a word tony no it just runs in the background.
just a suggestion you thought of changing broadband supplier at all some one like plusnet are offering fttc (fibre to cabinet) 80/20 unlimited package with no throttling etc for £9.99 for first 6 months then £19.99 for next 12 months so 18 month contract. also they have waived activation charge of £50.
    bottom of the list
    https://www.plus.net/home-broadband/
one of the best deals out there atm imho
also can pay line rental upfront for 12 months bring down to £10.49 instead of £13.99
    so £20.48 first 6,
then £30.49 for next 12 including line rental that way.
    hope it helps

    1. dcm - the thing you need is skygo app (free service to sky subscribers), use on up to 2 portable devices (pad, phone, laptop, xbox, PS3 etc.) to be able to watch a limited number of channels anywhere you have a bb connection (e.g. pub, McD, pub.... you beer monster ;) )

    2. to the OP, now you have sky+, you.......

NEVER HAVE TO WATCH ANOTHER ADVERT EVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!

instead of watching stuff in real-time, we record everything, then we can fast forward through ALL the ad breaks when we watch it back :D

..and, I never have to watch any soaps any more... double-bonus :D
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I presume that you are aware that you can use it to watch and record TV. :D

We have had Sky+ for about ten years now and would not be without it despite the expense. I know there are some cheaper alternatives but we watch a lot of sport that is only available on Sky Sports so we are more or less stuck with Sky.

We use it primarily for time shifting as it allows us to record programmes and watch them when it suits us. We often record all episodes of a series and then watch them back to back or over a few nights rather than watching one episode per week and losing track of the story lines.

Another benefit, as mentioned above, is that you can fast forward through boring ad breaks. Or you can speed through the chatter on quiz shows such as Eggheads and only watch the questions and answers. It takes us about 15 minutes to watch a 30 minute edition of Eggheads.

If I don’t have time to watch a 90 minute football match I have recorded, I watch the near the goal action in normal speed and then speed up to 2 times when the ball is in midfield. I can still easily follow the play at twice the speed. I go at 6 or 12 times speed when the ball goes out of play or there is a break in play for substitutions etc. My wife does similar with her tennis matches.

You can also rewind sections you have missed if you lose concentration. You can pause it to make a cup of tea, answer the phone etc.

The rewind and replay facility is also useful for good nude and sex scenes but I never do that myself of course.
