Flight Cancelled

After watching the programme last week I decided to contact American Airlines as we were booked on a flight with them in November last year from London to Miaml and then onwards to Costa Rica. Our flight from Heathrow was cancelled when we arrived for boarding and we were re routed to Chicago and then on to Miami and finally on to Costa Rica.
We were 15hrs late arriving at our destination. I contacted American Airlines and they very quickly responded and have offered USD$500 each in vouchers to put towards purchase of future ticket with them which must be used within 12 months.
I am thinking that we should be entitled to the maximum£508.00 per person under the new ruling.
Our cancelled flight never left Miami as there were insufficient crew.
Do you think I should accept or hold out for more?
