laptop leasing advice?

hi there, apologise if this is in the wrong area.

basically i have a laptop leased through pc world / currys. it as stolen a few months back via a break in to my home. had a police crime number etc. they would not replace the laptop as a little window was left open so they forced there arm in and opened a big window and they said it was not forced entry! i not started asking the question about cancelling the lease as i did not want to pay for something i dont have? at this point i was angry at the fact they would not replace the laptop. i then asked about how do i return the laptop at the end of the lease as i will not have it? there reply was that i would have to take out a new lease and return the new laptop i get. surely this isnt right as it would be never ending? really want to get out of this lease if its possible or even just to replace the laptop. what are my rights regarding this? any help would really be appreciated. thanks.

when you hire goods it is your responsibility to keep hold of them and return at the end - so in theory you need to keep paying for the product and return something in the end

it might be easier trying to get them to end the contract and settling for a lower amount.

as far as i know the consumer credit act does not give you any protection for stolen/lost hired goods.

Why should they replace or end the lease?

They left a product in your care, and through your negligence it was stolen.

OP, your household insurance won't pay up either?
  • At the end of a lease you may have had the option to buy the item (it may be in your contract) - if this is the case there may be a settlement figure you can pay at the end to effectively "buy" the laptop. The fact that it is stolen may mean this is the only option open to you as the company you are leasing it from would expect it back at the end of the lease.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • i was jsut asking the question that is all. i was living with parents at the time and as silly as it is they didnt have house insurance. i lost a lot of goods a very expensive watch etc wasnt happy at the time with parents for not paying the 10 pound a month or whatever it was is to have it. if i known i would of payed the insurance myself. i was surprised they wouldnt replace someone broke into the house to me thats theft. i had insurance on it through them that covered theft aswell.
  • But negligence leading to opportunistic theft is rarely covered, such as leaving a door/window open. Insurance companies actively look for reasons not to pay out and this seems to be a fairly easy win for them.

Sorry, it's going to be a painful and probably expensive lesson for you (or your parents!).

Currys/PC World do not sell any form of insurance product - including products that cover theft. So you were not covered for this through them. It is your responsibility to look after/insure the goods

This was a lease so I'm assuming infinity which has its own fire/flood/theft insurance through rentsmart so while they don't provide the insurance themselves it is the only product they offer with insurance.
