Mobile phone abroad query

Hello,

As usual, if I want a query answered, I ask here as, so far, you have never let me down

I've paid for my beloved son and my husband to go to the World Superbikes in Monza.... and there will obviously be thousands of people there. I thought it would be clever of them to use their uk mobile phones to text each other ... so that they don't have to go around joined at the hip....

The question is: do they just text each other using the mobile numbers they have or do they have to put on country and area codes ??? I've tried ringing up the mobile people and they seem to have difficulty in understanding what I am asking them !!!

I have to make it as easy as possible for my husband as he is just learning how to record a programme on the tv so mobile phones are a great leap for him :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The next question is: I have relations in Milan and I thought of giving them my husband's number and asking them for theirs.. so do I give them my husband's mobile number with the country code (for the uk) and do I add the italy country code onto theirs if I want to add their Italian number onto my husband's contacts???

I would like my husband to be able to contact them in an emergency.... as they are only about 10 minutes from Monza..

Thank you in advance

Cheers

This will depend on the network you are with in the uk, and the agreement they have with the roaming network.. If they have 'home from home' roaming agreements, you will be able to use the phone as normal, if not, then you would need the dialling codes placed in front of the numbers.

What network are they with here?

Use the international code, this will work regardless, even when in the UK. I store all my numbers in international format ie +44 then the number without the 0 eg if the number is 07890 123456 store it as +447890123456

And yes anyone else calling then would use the UK country code.

Also be aware they will be charged for receiving calls (but not texts).

They may even be blocked! Ovivo need roaming agreements over and above those held by their UK host network. These days, it is always safer to store/enter numbers in the +44 format, as it removes the hurdle of misrouting if the roamed network have been carp at setting up their routing tables.

Roaming in Italy, you can call or text to UK numbers with or without using the country code. Both will work.

Tell the Italians the number using +44, and use +39 in front of all Italian numbers for calling and texting.

Note that for calling Italian landlines, unlike othet countries, you do not delete the leading zero, so for example a Milan number would start with +3902, or Monza with +39039

Nope - as above it depends on the network. With Vodafone if you don't use a country code your call will be made to the country you're in - I've used my phone loads of times abroad to call numbers in the country I'm in without a country code. But when phoning home the +44 country code is needed.

You need to specifically enable roaming with Ovivo, as per this link below

This page also gives you details of all the rates.
