We've got wooden venetian blinds that are kept sort of half-and-half; our house fronts on to a little lane that leads to the coast path.

It's hardly the M4, but you'd be surprised how nosey some ramblers can be. :D

I'm sure the reasons the OP's relations commented was a generational thing. I used to open my curtains last thing at night to save time in the morning. Then DH said it would keep the rooms warmer if they were closed so we do that now and he opens them in the morning!

Round here we have loads of student houses and the curtains are almost always closed. I reckon it may be because they have ground floor bedrooms but it's more than likely because they're still in bed!:rotfl:

I like to see daylight and sunshine (when it shines) during the day it lifts my mood I couldn't bear to be in a gloomy house with curtains drawn and lights on , can't see why anyone else would want to sit in a gloomy house either. I open the blinds and windows as soon as I get up even on a cold day to freshen the air and brighten things up in the Winter I close them when it gets dark. I have blinds which I can angle if the sun is too hot in the Summer.. Hiding your 'stuff' by leaving curtains drawn isn't going to put off a burglar anyway they'll just think you have something interesting to hide.

We quite often leave the curtains shut all day but we are out at work so couldn't really care what the neighbours think.

If we are home at the weekend the curtains are usually open.

........ It's the Hyacinth Bouquet thing - what will the neighbours think.

This^. Oh, so much this ^.

"what will the neighbours say" was first MiL's mantra for life. I honestly think she made most of her decisions based on what she thought others would think about her. Poor ex-Fil was a shift worker who had sleep with the curtains open during the day!

Mind, second MiL not only thinks it but says it loudly. Curtains closed - she "knows" what you're doing AND who with

My family use the bedroom curtains being open/closed as a signal when they arrive home from work :o Mum's (my!) bedroom curtains closed? She's having a bad day healthwise and has gone back to bed or never got up in the first place. Disturb at your peril. Bedroom curtains open? Kettle at ready for cup of tea and chat :)

We have vertical blinds and curtains on the front windows. the curtains help to retain the heat in the winter, they also help to deflect sunshine glare on the television.

There are times we have them open and times we have them closed, there is no guideline or rule we have regarding the curtains, it depends entirely on the circumstances at the time.

Same. My mum gets all pearl clutchy over ot but we can't afford to leave the heating on all day and we don't have double glazing. It's the only thing that stops us coming home to an ice cold house! Not that it matters atm as I'm on maternity leave.
