    thanks very much

i read somewhere which said if she is on income support then she will get the full rent. she is currently looking for job and on income support . based on what i have read i guess this means she will get the full rent up to the allowed rate , am i correct ?

If you are on Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or the guarantee credit of Pension Credit (whether you get it on its own or with the savings credit), Housing Benefit will cover all of your eligible rent. But you need to remember that not all of your rent or housing costs may be covered.
Also, the Housing Benefit you can get may be reduced if another person lives with you who could be expected to pay towards their accommodation, even if they do not.
If your Housing Benefit does not cover all of your rent and you need more help, you may be able to get some additional money from the local authority

Yes in answer to your first question she will get the rent up to the allowed rate. The additional help is extremely unlikely to be forthcoming with the situation with the Bedroom Tax/LHA overall and people with disabilities etc. who are affected. So unless she falls into that category, I wouldn't recommend taking on a new tenancy on that basis. I.e. if there is a very big shortfall in the rent that cannot be met.

Presumably she's on income based JSA and not IS.

Most private rentals will not take DSS tenants.
    Where is she living now?

according to below from council of that area, it says that you will get benefit for two rooms, is living room part of the 2 rooms count?

If you are aged 35 or over and live alone
If you are 35 or over and live alone you can get the rate for a two-roomed property if you rent a self contained property with at least two rooms. For example, this could be a one-bedroom flat.

If you choose to live in a property where all or some of the facilities are shared, you can only get the shared Local Housing Allowance rate. Shared facilities could be a living room, kitchen or bathroom.

The poster quotes a 2 bed property.

    thanks

Is she in a position to work and pay her rent herself?

Relying on benefits is so demeaning.

So, your friend is looking for a 1 bedroom rental property and will need to claim HB.

As others have said, she can rent a property of any size and receive the LHA for the appropriate property size. However, if she chooses to move into shared accommodation, she would only be entitled to the Shared Room Rate of Local Housing Allowance.

With regards to the deposit, it is unlikey that if she has just moved to the area, she would be considered as funds are small and need is great but she should contact her Housing Office in Barnet for help.

Every LA's time to process claims is different and so there is no easy answer. We aim to process claims within 14 days but in my LA, we are averaging more than 24 days. It will help greatly if she applies and provides everything they need at that time. So she will need to have a property to claim for, evidence of ID and National Insurance, evidence that she is on JSA IB as a start.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
