broken LCD 4 days into contract on 3?

I honestly have no idea how this happened, but the LCD screen appears to have broken underneath. The phone is 4 days into it's contract, and I know they are going to try to charge me if I send this back under repair.
The phone is 100% immaculate with not even a scratch, is there anything I can do not to be charged? (No insurance by the way, it's the 1st time in my life i've never been offered it!)
