Thank you so much for your message and for taking the time to read through this thread. Everytime I log in I am amazed at how many views and responses there are to this thread.
You are right, the shame element is the one I have had the biggest problem with. I felt worthless and often woke up at night worrying. Debt really can affect every area of your life.... correction.... not dealing with debt can affect every area of your life. I have found in this short time, that dealing with it is not half as scary as it is hiding from it. I wont say its easy, but its worth it.
What has been the most surprising to me - particularly when talking to others on this site and also to friends and colleagues - is how many people are in a similar situation.
Dealing with this is my full time project at the moment, but I am very optimistic that once all arrangements are firmly in place I will soon be able to get on with life again without this taking over.I refuse to bury my head in the sand any longer. I live for the day I will not fear the phone, the post or the knock at the door.0 -
Well I did it! I really did it! I made a plan and I stuck to it.
I have successfully repaid 3 people in full and one person 50% of what I owe them. Thats 4 more people that I no longer have to avoid.
I got the envelopes ready the day before and put in a little note to say - "thank you for your kindness and patience". Got paid, went to cashpoint and popped the money in the envelopes. Handed them back face to face and it was such a relief. Looking forward to doing the same next month.
Did my shopping over the weekend and made a weekly menu plan and bought only what I needed - and also items that I can make lunches with for work so that saves money there.
I have contacted StepChange and they are restructuring my DMP to take into account the repayments to friends and the other "hidden" debts. (you know, the ones that you never tell them about) - why do we do that? set up a Debt Management Plan and then conveniently forget to tell them about that doorstep loan or that credit agreement, perhaps its something to do with wanting to hang on to some debt or creditor in the hope of using them again.... anyhoo, thats a whole new thread.
So things are looking a lot brighter. Still focussed.
Thank you all for your support.I refuse to bury my head in the sand any longer. I live for the day I will not fear the phone, the post or the knock at the door.0 -
