A friend of mine got a £100 voucher for a very good local restaurant a few years ago, he invited myself and another friend. Between the two of us we said we pay anything over the £100, the friend with the voucher wanted to split any extra equally but we insisted.

Personally I feel that just because you got the voucher for free doesn't negate the fact that you will probably be providing more than your share of the meal. I wouldn't ask them to pay anything though if it came to less than £100.

I've had similar vouchers in the past that only cover food and not drink, when I've invited people and explained they have always offered to pay for the drinks, sometimes I've accepted and sometimes I split it - depends on the situation.

Surely people don't profit from friends?

Either treat the three of you or sell the voucher.

As you invited them out then that means you are paying, unless you eat and drink within the £100 limit anything over that then split it 3 ways, after all you did win the voucher.
  • Another reason (if morals weren't enough) to share the voucher: I bet they don't give you change. So you're pouring away money to spite your friends, if you don't include them in the voucher (assuming your meal is less than a hundred quid!).
  • I would most definitely not be asking my friends for any money but if the bill worked out more then £100 I would hope that my friends would foot the difference between them as the £100 should have more then covered your share.

Just be honest and explainit as you have above.

If they are true friends then they will understand - if not then you will know you have acquaintances and not real friends.

    SEEMPLES
    Hope that helps!

I think the slightly unfortunate thing here is turning a lovely windfall into a dilemma at all, and having the potential to upset good friends.

Personally I'd have done exactly what the issuer of the voucher intended and gone, had a lovely night out and treated some friends if the budget allowed.

Either to your friends, or to anyone else, just sell the voucher if money is that hard.

if youre having financial problems surely your finances come before dining out!
Me personally i'd sell the voucher for £50, stay at home and make a pan of stew, or beans on toast with cheese on top.
surely that would help with your 'financial problems' slightly.
i wouldnt dream of dining out if i was struggling for cash.
