... off each other.
I never did this myself. But I was looking to buy some self storage space and I phoned up and asked for a quote. I was quoted £90. I asked the self storage guys that I'd be happy to do it for £60.
They refused the counter offer and got back to me deducing £5.
I said that's ridiculous can't you do any better? i know that most of your storage units are empty right now. But still wouldn't budge.
So I rang around and got quotes from competitors. one Quoted £60. So I called up the first company (only because it was closer to me than the other one). Told them Y is offering the same space for £60. Then immediately dropped their quote down to match it.
Why did I have to go through this hassle to get a decent quote?
Is this a done thing? Do people lie and say Y offered my a cheaper quote to lower it down. Why does it work like this?

Probably because your idea of reasonable price doesn't fit in to their business model - but deciding since occupation is low at present they may as well match the quote and get the business.
As for insurance companies, if they ask what my cheapest quote is so far I always tell them a few hundred quid less. Although if they do come out at slightly higher they rarely seem to offer to match or beat it0 -
I'd say it's possibly because the first time you called you came across all wrong.
The second time you called, you came up with a price and the company. They probably already know Y does it for £60, so price matched it.0 -

I guess you are spot on, they all know what their competitors charge.
i have been using these storage places for years0 -
What does this have to do with motoring though?0

Because in 2 weeks time the price goes back to normal.
They say the price offered by company x was to new customers for 2 weeks storage only.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

storing car parts (like a 998cc Imp engine since 1980) because it will come in useful one day?
Ditto a Mk 1 lotus cortina engine and some cibie super oscars etc etc from the same period0 -

Depends on what you agree at the time of contract and how long you sign up for.
BUT as previous poster, why is it in the motoring thread...OH yes look who the OP is0 -

not quite, the thread was related to service sector sales in general. Had similar issues when try to get car insurance. I felt a bit cheeky fibbing and saying company Y offered me £600, when they haven't. Is there any way they can know?
Also generally speaking how would you go about negotiating a cheaper insurance?
Do you get, say three quotes and then you just do a bluff saying the other has offered £200 less then what they actually quoted or something? From what I heard all the quote systems are tied in so the insurers know what other companies are quoting. So they can just work out you're !!!!!!!!ting.
Do they know yiou're !!!!!!!!ting but just play along anyway?0 -

They'll probably have the price they are willing to accept. If your made up quote is above that, they may undercut it slightly.
If it's not, they may tell you they dont price match.0
