You might be able to persuade an existing insurer to shave a bit off if the rival quote is close to theirs, but if you tell one company another has quoted £200 less they might be more inclined to wonder why you're wasting time calling them to haggle, or they might ask if the degree of cover (place, your trade, annual mileage, etc) is the same

I was buying tyres recently and was keen on one particular tyre which I couldn't find in stock anywhere. I then spoke to a chap and yes he had them in stock but they were £20 more expensive at £60. I argued that so and so had them at £40.

He then asked if they had them in stock and I said "no" at which point he responded "well if I didn't have them in stock I'd be selling them for £20".........I thought fair point. :rotfl:

    ... off each other.

..... Why did I have to go through this hassle to get a decent quote?

Is this a done thing? Do people lie and say Y offered my a cheaper quote to lower it down. Why does it work like this?

I always use comparison sites to check my car or home insurance renewal quote, then either haggle or switch. Incredibly, I've sometimes almost cut renewal costs in half! The funniest ones are when my current insurer comes up on the comparison chart- at much less than the quote I've just received. On one or two occasions I've used my wife's name (we don't share a surname but have identical driving histories) in case the current insurer's software is cleverer than me.

And you don't have to lie- on some occasions they've believed me on the phone- on others I've emailed a screen copy of the quotes, and if your existing company crops up on the comparison site- they'll have a machine record at their end and although it's a bit shabby, they will evade the commission which they'd otherwise pay to the comparison site if they then do a deal with you direct.

The meerkat starves but that's the market for you!
