Coast - in-store returns

Hi all,
Just wanted to take a minute to let off steam and vent my frustration at the in-store returns policy at Coast.
My wife recently purchased two dresses from a Coast store as potential outfits to wear for a wedding. After trying them on and getting the opinions of her friends and family, she decided to return the items. However, she was informed that because it was over 14 days since she had purchased the dresses (today is the fifteenth day), she could only have the sum refunded onto a store gift card and not onto the debit card she purchased the items with (apparently if you return an item within 14 days you get the refund on your card, but between 14 and 28 days they only refund you with a gift card).
I‘m extremely upset at this outcome and I cannot understand the reasons for this returns policy. Every other store I know of has a 28 day returns policy, without a stipulation for only offering the refund in the shape of a store card.
What makes the situation even more frustrating is that my wife explained that she was going to get a second opinion on the dresses and may return one, yet the store assistant neglected to inform her of this returns policy. Had my wife known, she would have returned the dress(es) and got her debit card refunded sooner.
We aren’t talking about a small amount of money here either. As we haven’t had the cash refunded to our account it is going to make this month very tough for us.
Can anyone suggest the best way of making most of the cash back? My friends have suggested selling the store card on eBay. Obviously won’t get the full amount back but I can’t think of anything better.
Cheers!

In fairness a 14 day no quibble cash refund policy seems quite generous. A lot of stores aren't as good as that. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Cheers!- you have no statutory right to a refund on goods purchased in a shop.
- you may have a contractual right, but that is determined at the point of sale.
- if you weren't told of the store's policy, and there are no notices displaying it, it is always best to either ask or assume that no returns are allowed for change of mind.
- the policies of other shops are not relevant.
- sell the gift card on ebay, people sometimes pay silly prices for them.
