I have Onya Bags made from parachute material. they live clipped onto my handbag. I also have an Iceland one which lives tied onto my work bag ;) I tend to refuse bags if offered one currently anyhow.

As for the bin issue, it's only plastic wrap which goes in my bin. food waste goes in the kitchen caddy for brown bin, or my four legged waste disposal if it's suitable for him!. Recyclables go in kerbie boxes. Everything else (tissues, cotton balls from make up etc)goes in one or other of my multi fuel stoves ;) Toilet roll inners are great for lighting the fire :)

Invest in some 'bags for life'?

Or are these now regarded as tax avoidance?
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

I never have a bag when I need one and being a bloke don't carry a handbag stuffed with emergency plastic bags. Twice in the past week I've had my collar felt while exiting a well known grocery store carrying a bottle of wine in each hand because I didn't feel it necessary to use a bag at all. Apparently I looked like a "robber man" to the spotty youth dressed as a security guard. I should point out that I'd paid for the wine!

Don't really see much of a problem if your prepared, I've been using Tesco bags for life for quiet a while now. They had free weekends for these last year in my local and I got 10 of them for free :) When they wear out I get fresh ones for free from Tesco and also 1 clubcard point for every bag I use. These bags get taken to M&S on the weekends I'm feeling flush enough to shop there, I have never paid for a bag in my life and I don't intend to start now.

If you are a clubcard holder you should of received a token for 3 free bags in the post last week, or just use their free cardboard veg boxes at the tills to take your shopping home, easily recycled in the blue bin or handy for lighting the fire with :)
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

I have been paying for Lidl bags for years and do not see it as a problem. Bags cost money afterall.

The only difference I see is that I now I will be paying for the bag plus a little bit extra to HMRC.

why are the bags not taxed at wholesale .
Surely that would be the easiest way to tax them .

    Because there are some exemptions.

It's what the bags are used for that is tax rather than the bags themselves.

I was at the cooked meat counter of Sainsbury today. My chicken was put into a paper bag, the guy said if they used the tiny plastic ones then the customer would have to pay 5p for it.

He was spinning you a line.

The new law does not come into effect until the 8th and it does not distinguish between paper and plastic:
As paper bags and other alternatives to plastic bags can be equally damaging to the environment, from 8 April 2013 the carrier bag levy will apply to all single use carrier bags – not just plastic bags.

One of these would apply to your purchase:
Some single use carrier bags will be exempt from the levy:
    • bags used to contain take-away hot food and hot drinks
    • bags used solely to contain certain items such as unpackaged food...
    • ...
    • certain types of small bags
    • ...
