looking to book and pay for my break in the next few weeks so any more tips would be greatfully received. Want to leave Edinburgh around the 7th of Jan 2014 with a days stay in Singapore then on to Sydney. Staying at brothers but might have a look at serviced apartments if anyone has any to recomend. Leaving Sydney around the 25th of jan 2014 and have one day in Singapore on way home.

Browse the features of Kayak.co.uk, eg. I've just found Finnair Manchester to Sydney via Helsinki and Bangkok outward, via Singapore and Helsinki on the return (out 8/1, return 28/1) for £2835 each.
To get a stopover, I'd suggest trying the Multi-City option rather than return - you can't be flexible on dates so you have to enter each possible date.
This above fare directs to finnair.com.
As for Frequant Flyer points, for Finnair you'd be best of signing up to the BA Executive Club, as you'll get much better value from your points.

Anyone going to the US might find using finnair site a good option as they have a business class sale.
I just priced up London to Honolulu for next May, £3086 in business class but the flights are LHR - LAX with BA and then LA to HNL with American. A bargain!

Not as good as last year though - they'd mis-priced it, meaning GBP1400 for a LON-SYD return in Business! Still some good options there, especially to Asia. To the OP, it might be worth just buying a return to Singapore, spending your couple of days there, and continuing on with eg. Scoot or Jetstar on to Sydney.
