Parents taking infants on long flights are turning to medication to help their children sleep...
I remember being advised this by a Dr about ten years ago!

No, I wouldn't. It's just not worth the risk of the baby having an adverse reaction at 35,000 feet.
Luckily all my babies travelled well, if they weren't good travellers I wouldn't have taken them long haul, or any plane for that matter.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I wouldn't take a baby on a long haul flight.
I've travelled the world listening to screaming babies, it's a nightmare, even in business class.travelover0 -
There was a guy saying that his kid normally had a particular medication, and its side effect was sleep so he just continued it for the flight.
The article is very interesting since it discusses the effect of jetlag and how it can be negated through babies sleeping, there is the obvious duress etc.
I wouldn't do it personally, but can understand some parents that do.0 -
ive heard that said before..."give em some good old calpol and they will sleep"
A. it horrifies me, how irresponsible to give a perfactly well child medication when there is no medical need.
B. What a load of old tishtosh.0 -
My mum used to give my brother brandy when we flew from about the age of 13. He hates flying. Still does. And still requires dutch courage. My mum also gave us Calpol as kids: one parent with 3 children under 5 on a 15 hour flight, it was only the once and to be fair I had D&V. We're all fine

I assume you never travelled when you were young/baby.
No i wouldnt drug mine, he travelled with us inc long haul from 7 months old and was never a problem though0 -
If a child wouldn't be calm enough to fly without being drugged then the parents should seriously consider if it's appropriate for them to be going on a planeLost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Personally I wouldn't take a baby on a long haul flight unless there was no other option eg, a holiday is NOT a reason, dashing abroad as a close relative is ill might be. But no I wouldn't drug a child and TBH I haven't found any of the usual drugs people use for kids cause any of mine to get sleepy even when used for the normal treatments ie, calpol makes no difference and on occasion if we had to use child benadryl again no sleepiness.
My Mum talks about how the Dr used to tell parents to get that Phenagan and "use a few drops in the bottle" when the parents needed to get some sleep, but then that was in the 70's. We have only flown when ours were 3 or older and we have backpacks at the ready, with colouring books/new little toys/sweets/snacks etc to keep them busy. DS always loved the tv/games thing you usually get on long haul flights and we took it in turns to do a couple of walks up and down the isles with them as its good for ev1 to get moving on a long haul flight anyway.

Wasn't Dr McCann by any chance?
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
