So I have absolutely no idea where to put this, please move if necessary. I'm just a little stumped.
There was an incident really close to our house the other day, 5-6 police cars, ambulance, tape, the whole she-bang. Yesterday I am washing up in the kitchen, when I go in the living room to see two Policemen who had unlocked our back gate (It's a really stiff lock and we thought could only be opened from inside which is worrying) and were poking through our bins and shrubbery. One noticed me and came to the door to tell me they were searching for a knife and wouldn't give any more details of the incident.
They hadn't knocked on the door, I assume because there was no car on the drive they assumed no one was in. I am all up for helping the Police but this has rattled me a bit.
The incident that happened up the road has already worried me a lot as it's a bit close for comfort, but we always thought that our back garden was really secure as the lock is incredibly stiff (My husband has to use two hands to do it from inside) so the fact they had just opened it and wandered in has shook me up a bit, as if Police can do it others can.
The real question is, can they just unlock a locked gate and enter your secure back garden without knocking? I am all for helping them, but I really thought they would check if anyone is home first? Good thing I was dressed!

I think they already had a fright when some scraggled woman came to the door smelling of bleach covered in flour, nevermind if I had been au naturale.0

 NO!
Apart from a few very specific and well-defined exceptions (like saving a life) it's trespass and illegal.
http://www.stephensons.co.uk/site/individuals/public_law_civil_liberties/discompliant/trespass/"There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0

Well you see I'm trying to knock off my husband for life insurance so give his cupcakes a little 'extra'....
No seriously, I was deep cleaning my bathroom, then decided to make bread. Honest.0

 Very, very white bread?
Sorry just noticed you'd already answered, prefer the idea that hubby's cupcakes get a little extra bite. Maybe that's what the police were doing!Kate short for Bob.
