Time for a new boiler

Hi everyone,

My boiler is 15 years old, and is working fine at the moment but I'm aware that it will probably need replacing at some point. We had a quote from British Gas yesterday, and because we had booked the visit in February our quote included the £400 cashback that was advertised then. As well as discount for having Homecare our quote showed a saving of £550. I have looked into the Green Deal and seen that the potential cashback there is only £270.

British Gas have also said that they give a year's free Homecare with every new boiler, so I would be saving approx £20 a month there for a year, and considering our current boiler has an Energy Rating of E we will hopefully have cheaper bills too.

Does it sound like a good deal?

You'd need to get another couple of quotes from other installers aswell and weigh up the pros an cons between them all before coming to a decision.

I'd wait until that point arrives. ;)

Which boiler are they quoting for? If it's a Worcester Bosch then they are currently offering a 5 year parts and labour guarantee. This means that you will only need to fork out for an annual service.
You could try negotiating for BG to extend their Homecare cover for a few more years should you decide on going with them

Just been quoted £1400 to replace my Ideal RS 250 Mexico for similar but not permanent pilot light so some savings.
But like Little Jo says...not broke so no need to fix.

The BG '£400 off' a new boiler is like carpet or sofa prices-it's a permanent sale offer. The reality is that it's £400 of a price that is typically 40% higher than an independent GSR RGI would quote you in the first place. Don't be fooled.
It's pointless to change a reliable working boiler, it will take you 10 years to recover the cost in efficiency savings.

O.P.: any chance of posting up the full quote?

Until the boiler is beyond economical repair or you are planning major renovations in your home which require relocation of the exiting boiler, keep what you have.

40% savings over a independent RGI might be over-egging it.

Um it's not on at the moment so permanent may not be the correct term.
That 40% higher line of tripe is very tedious. Are bg typically 40% higher than the independent whose work I saw last month involving a horribly fitted ravenheat that cost 8000 boiler swap only or are they typically 40% higher than my mate who installs on a day rate of 100?. Or is there an rrp I somewhere I have yet to see?

He didn't say DIY..it didn't get that far, just that the new straight swap boiler would be non permanent pilot.
He said that mine was old type when put in 1997.
