Talk Talk Issues

So I made the massive mistake of joining talk talk (counting down the days until my contract has finished). We have had various problems with the internet cutting off for days on for a period of 6 months(being university students in a shared house this isn't great). It finally seems to have sorted itself out (although still awful speed) however, a more concerning issue has just come to light.
Earlier I received an answerphone message from talk talk for a random woman I have never heard of stating that payment was due. Seeing as I was with talk talk I thought I should check my account and see whether they had just got my name wrong. My account stated that last months payment was overdue - this is despite me paying direct debit. I checked my online banking account as I was sure I remembered the money coming out and my online account says it was paid in full.
I tried phoning talk talk but spoke to a horrible woman who said she couldn't help and just hung up.
I'm not sure what to do now - I am always terrified when I call talk talk because they speak to me like rubbish (despite the fact whenever I complain I'm always really polite about it). But I have paid and I don't want the internet to be cut off just as we have our dissertations to write.
Also this is obviously not my first problem with talk talk. I would like to cancel my contract early due to these problems, but I don't want to have to pay the huge cancellation fee. Do companies waver this if there have been consistent problems?
Thanks

Are the DD details correct? You need to resolve this with TT, despite your dislike of phoning them. It won't just be that you will be eventually cut off, they will also trash your credit record for 6 years.
No, service issues do not allow you to void your contract without paying any ETC due. The most you'll have got, and only if you asked for it, is a credit for the downtime. There is no SLA on a residential contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop
