Thanks elantan & miss Money Magnet.....I'm literally just making a start & planning....there won't be any major over paying in the foreseeable future...but I will pay something extra every month. I just want to get on track and finally start planning for the future...rather than scraping by & not really getting anywhere fast:rotfl:

My £5 overpayment is now showing on my mortgage account:j - so at least I know I set up the payment correctly:rotfl:.

Today my mortgage stands at £108012.03.......not sure I like checking this figure regularly as it varies so much with the daily interest.....I was under £108000 a few days ago :(.

Am starting to get a little anxious about borrowing more......it will allow us to pay our debts (I know that's not the best things to do;)) and to get the much needed work done....but for us, it'll be the most we've ever borrowed and is quite a chunk of our income! However, we are paying out that amount anyway each month on the current mortgage and debt repayments.....so will be no worse off....it's just a bit daunting!

On a positive - have had 2 NSDs.....spent the day with my friend and her children yesterday and a good time was had by all! Much tea & coffee drunk...but it was nice to chill and catch up whilst the children amused each other. I think she'll be in for a shock in a couple of years when they plan to move to their "forever house" as their mortgage currently is tiny.......their payments will have to more than double I think, to get what they want.....but she has her head screwed on financially (puts me to shame) so am sure they'll do it! Was talking to her about my plas to overpay...she thinks it sounds like a great idea and think it may have got her mind thinking....:T

Today will not be a NSD as I'm taking the children to the cinema - but it is cheaper today - only £3 each...so not overly expensive. I will be stopping off to buy drinks & sweets on the way:money:

Have a kitchen company coming tonight to look at doing some plans & pricing up....excited but also anxious about what the likely cost could be

    Right...better get moving.....have a good day all!

  • Well done you on getting started. It does get much more expensive as the children grow so any difference that you can make now will be a great help later.
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

    Hi Brummiebabe,

    Good luck with the overpayments.

With the decorating, I'd say have a good look on ebay: there are a few traders of 'gone bust' kitchen stock that are incredibly good value for kitchen units etc: you just need to get a design ready (free from other kitchen outlets) so you know what units you need...

Thanks Rottensocks....once the plan is done & we have an idea of what we can expect & require....then we can look around for the best deals:money:

At the moment we don't really know what to expect cost wise:eek:

First kitchen quote in.........for supplying & fitting units & appliances along with associated electrical/plumbing work.....£8200.00!! they were lovely units......but I think we can get it cheaper.....;)

Have had a lovely day today....went to the cinema , then lunch at my sisters & then a party with DD.

Spent approximately £6.50 on treats for 5 of us......dread to think what I'd have spent if I'd have bought them there!!

Finally paid off my Next account today:j:j:j - it was only around £50 but I just wanted it gone!!

My mind is still full of figures......and being amazed at how some people can save so much money/overpay by huge sums each month. I suppose everyone's circumstances are different & I am very lucky that I can work part-time & be around before/after school for my children. I could work full time & earn considerably more.....but the impact on family life would be significant - and the children take priority at this time! DH is the same....he could take a higher paying job but be away for chunks of time during the week - as it is, he's home by 6pm & is able to play an active role with the kids......taking them to football training etc.....

So, for now, there is little we can change regarding our income.....maybe I need to start ebaying.......but I find it SO tedious & rarely make enough to make it worthwhile.:(

On a positive note: today will be a NSD:beer: Children are still on their Easter holidays but we're not going anywhere today after 2 busy days out. It'll be time to try & conquer that ironing mountain:eek::eek:

  • You sound like you're doing so well already! I am in a similar position to you in that OH and I are taking on a bigger mortgage so no OP's for the moment just stacks of saving. You seem to have a great plan so I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on.

  • Hi BB,

Well done in clearing the account! I wouldn't think too much about how much other people can overpay - more often that not its proportionate and whilst one person might be able to over pay £100pm on a £90k mortgage another can overpay £500pm on a mortgage much larger. I found when I focused too much on other peoples figures rather than taking inspiration from their journey I didn't appreciate just how much I was achieving. For example each month we over pay a fixed amount by standing order but there are no other £'s in our budget to overpay after this not even 50p. Yet this month I have so far saved £130 on top of the fixed amount. That really is amazing and I am not quite sure how I have managed it. It certainly doesn't mean that someone who has saved £400 to overpay has done a better job than me - this might be 'spare money' to them and they might not have had to struggle too much to save it.

Pat yourself on the back you are doing a fab job!!!!
    Keep going :)
