I don't think the government should provide support for having children at all,

I agree, if a woman/couple have a child, or children and can't afford it the government should just let the b*gger suffer. Even if they can afford it when it is born, but then their circumstances change and they struggle to feed it, we should just let it suffer.

After all, there's no excuse for having a baby when you are short of money. If you do get "caught out" you can just tell the doctor you can't afford a baby and he will arrange to have it killed before it sees the light of day.

It would save the government a fortune, and when we see children suffer we can all just say "It's your own fault, you should have stayed where you were. We're all right, we've had our child benefit, it's you who are not getting any and we don't care how much you suffer for it because we are all right Jack, we got born first and got our free money".
  • Is this thread for real!! i cant believe someone is actually posting saying they will get another £100 per month if they have another child!! If you cant afford it don't have one. I'm sure everyone is really excited for you especially as we will be paying that extra £100 per month!!

Not after they have capped it to £26,000 a year.

There's no cap for working families, just for familes where both parents don't work.

£100 a month isn't that much extra for a child. The OP's partner must be earning quite well for a child to only increase their CB and CTC income by that much.

And for those moaning about other taxpayers having to fork out, not quite. For people earning enough for the award for a third child to only be £100 a month, they must be paying out more than enough income tax for that award to be an income tax rebate for them, no contributions from other taxpayers required.

I know OP's husband works so it's not living completely on benefits but I just fail to understand how some people can plan a 3rd child when not earning enough while people such as me are only just having my first and worrying I won't be able to have a second because of my job and finances.

I know so many working people, with working partners who are putting off having children, some even making horrible choices (yes terminating pregnancies) because they would literally be unable to afford to be off work and looking after a child or paying for childcare.
I'm pregnant now and it wasn't planned...I'm 29, been with my partner 12 years, we both work and yet I found myself agonising over my finances and whether I could have my baby. I've spreadsheet'ed until it's school age to make sure I was doing the right thing and thankfully finance wise I can cope, although I will miss lots of my child's milestones as I have to work once the year's maternity is up. It does make me sad but it's my child and my duty to work to look after it. Posts like this are just a kick in the teeth to the many people who I know are in exactly the same position.

Having said all that the way I see it, living off benefits is no guarantee in life. Give me a career and a working life over benefits any day. At least I know I've provided for my family myself and aren't just having to hope the government will keep giving me these handouts. I'd hate to have that reliance on someone other than me (or my partner).

I agree with you that benefits aren't reliable. But you have the same choice as any other mother who works, i.e. be a SAHM, giving up your income but maybe with some benefits to partially offset the loss of income, or stay in work and give your child to extended family or strangers to take care of while you work.

I don't think any mother can be reasonably expected to make a choice in that regard until they have had their first child.
