How will it add up to £100 per week for a working family ?

There is more to life than money .
It is nothing new however, many a family had another child to take a step up the council housing ladder when I was small.
I believe my parents did and at least one of my friends' parents did the same.
I think to say that handing down clothes, toys and equipment or obtaining them from a charity shop is poverty, is not true.
Being affluent is no guarantee of good parenting and having a small income is no indication of child neglect either.
I don't think that the government wants to dissuade people from having children, they want to avoid a population where the majority are on benefits as a lifestyle choice and having many children was once the way to obtain more welfare payments.
I am not sure the OP is correct to say that more children brings more income, as has been pointed out, more children means more mouths to feed and you cant stretch the same food to fill more tums even if you can make clothes etc last over several children.
If your children are close in age, they may need the same things at the same time for example clothes and equipment for secondary school.
If they are both genders, one set of things may not be appropriate for the next child down.

I think back to when ours were small they are in their thirties now.

We have two and we did get child allowance but we always struggled. Hubby had a job that meant short time every so often then that was followed by factories closing and redundancy.

In 1990 he was made redundant out of work for 6 months then got another job on half the wages he earnt before.

The point I am getting to is, when the children finally went out to work things looked up financially so much so that today although we have retired we have a reasonable standard of living better than we ever had when they were small.

However, close to where I live, there IS a "family" who have been churning out kids for benefits purposes. Half of them are farmed out to live with their gran and at weekends/holidays the kids are turned out of the house first thing to occupy themselves and summoned back in when it starts to get dark. It's heartbreaking to see such lovely, intelligent, lively children gradually sinking through lack of parental support into foul-mouthed scumhood, simply because they are so bored. :([/QUOTE]

Sounds like a "family" beside me, parents are not interested unless it involves drink and drugs.... if the children dont get fed at the grandparent then its mcdonalds or junk food every day in life..... sad really..... plus you just know the children will grow up to be spongers like the parents.....

The government should only give benefits to the first 2 children.

Would solve a lot of problems. Employment, Benefits, UK Debt, Food Shortages, Housing Shortages.....I could go on...

I think the OP is taking the urine by asking a question like that on here, whilst people seem somewhat horrified I am certain that people do genuinely have kids to make money.
It is a sad state of affairs to think that children have now become a commodity and are not born out of sheer love, but to see how much profit they can make.
When I had my children I wanted to give then a lot of what I didn't have, not have them to clothe them in charity shop clothes and a value supermarket food packed lunch. It;s bad enough that families have to resort to this action because of a sad change in their circumstances, but to have them with the intention of bringing them up in a poverty stricken lifestyle is unthinkable.
Having two children these days is surely enough, I fail to see the need for another poor child being created for the sake of a few pounds. Horrendous and disgraceful!

I was brought up in Charity shop and home made clothes and am now working a a reasonably well paid professional job and I would say over 70% of my clothes still come from charity shops.

If and when I have children a lot of their clothes will come from charity shops too. Children grow quickly so getting them cheap good quality clothes is sensible IMO and you are helping both charities and the environment (Recycling!) by buying second hand.

Oh and to add - I would also like more than 2 children - nto for the income but because I believe in Family and believe that it would be best for my children to have the support of more than 1 sibling as they grow up, I have 1 brother and the majority of my cousins and friends all come from larger families and when their is any illness etc in the extended family I always envy them that they have their brothers and sisters for support.

I believe giving my children a good support network will be more beneficial for them in the long run than designer clothes, sports club memberships etc.

I didn't say not to have more than 2 children. I said that the government should only provide financial support for the first 2 children.

Have as many as you like - as long as you can pay for them and not rely on tax payers money to bring them up it's fine.

I don't think the government should provide support for having children at all, but i do think couples should be allowed to share their personal allowance - especially if one parent stays at home to look after the children.

My belief is that the benefits childless people get should go up, as they are currently ridiciously low and if you think you stretch your income to have a child that is your decision and no bigger housing should be given simply for having a child.
I would Possibly keep child benefit as at £14 a week or whatever it is not really an incentive to have a child but should help keep children fed etc.

I am not going to waste my time on this but my 2 cents is that to even think of this is sick and you should never have children on the basis of trying to profit from them.
