Having another child to up your income?

Ive been reading this forum for a while, and was pleased to find out that when I get pregnant with our 3rd (Im assuming that will be any minute now), we will get an extra £100 per month! I was surprised as children always seem to be an expense.

I don't work, my husbands salary is under the limit for CB, and I already have all the bits I need, Ill breastfeed it and nappies don't cost that much. So surely when child number 3 is born, Ill be better off no?

Will you still be breastfeeding it when it is 6or 7? Will it still be in nappies?

The thing with kids is the older they get the more they cost. You may be better off in the short term, but sooner or later they will be costing more than the extra you get for them.

Bit like peeing in your trousers I suppose. Im not sure how much CB is after the first year, but unless it goes down a lot it sort of seems to me that children pay for themselves if you don't have to pay out for childcare. Mind you mine aren't at the stage where they want ipads and such

    First of all - congratulations!

Secondly - Errr, is this for real?

The first year is the cheapest period. You wait til they are school age and need uniform, shoes, money for school trips, wanting to go out with their friends, holidays cost more with more than 2 kids, family meals are based on 4.

No, child benefit won't go down after the first year. But the government are trying to put people off having kids so don't expect it to be easy!

You may have to get a larger car - will your car take 3 decent car seats (infant carrier, rear facer, booster seat, depending on your kid's ages) across the back?
  • If you can have 17 kids, you can get around £60k per annum in benefits. I remember seeing it on tv today.

yes but with two partners he could have still been getting £52k couldnt he?

but yes 3 children should provide more income than two and they can have hand me downs for shoes etc shouldnt cost too much. its only when you have a lot more that you have to worry about the cap

My other 2 are school age, and they don't cost that much. Uniforms are almost as cheap as charity shop for example, and a packed lunch is probably less than £1 a day. Ive read so many headlines saying that a baby cost £xxx it makes it seem so expensive, but I cant help seeing them as a bit of an earner! Might be proved wrong though...Ive never actually sat down and added it up.

I guess this is just an average as spending 8k a year on a child is well OTT since we generally don't have that much to spend as a family!! ;)

But I guess thier saying if your helping out with cars/marriages/education in long run it adds up.
