iPhone 4S - Warranty and Contract

Right, so a relative of mine took out a 24 month One Plan contract with Three in January 2012, with a 16GB iPhone 4S. Recently, the WiFi stopped working on the phone. While the One Plan has unlimited data, the WiFi is pretty essential, as he gets next to no mobile signal at home, and WiFi would allow internet access, along with iMessage in this area. He also has a couple of AirPlay speakers, and without WiFi, these are useless. He went to the Genius Bar, however they wouldn't fix it, as it was out of warranty. Three have said that they only provide the Apple one year warranty, so if he wants it fixed, it looks as if he's going to have to pay. However, surely any phone, especially an iPhone, should last longer than a year? And as he took out a 24 month contract, surely the phone should last the length of the contract?

Yes. See about SoGA in MSE article: Consumer Rights Armour

This is far less sure. Search the board for 'supply services' (Supply of the Goods and Services Act).

The phone was an inducement, and has no bearing on the length of the contract. There is no inherent issue with WiFi on the 4S, so if you took it to the Genius Bar, what did they say the issue was?

Have you the latest firmware installed (via iTunes)? The phone is still working, so your premise is awry - you have the task to prove it was not your misuse at caused the problem.

The phone has the latest firmware. In the Apple store, they factory reset the phone. The issue seems to be affecting a number of people(link), Software seems to be the culprit, however we can't find any way of fixing the phone.
