The computer is connected through an ethernet cable.

It's Windows XP, we use IE, FF or Chrome but none of these connect to the internet.

In LAN settings there is one box clicked which says 'automatically detect settings'

ipconfig only says 'windows Ip configuration' then goes back to C:\Documents and Settings etc

ping 127.0.0.1 says 'pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes =32 time>1ms TTL=128 (4 times)

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss>
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average - 0ms

Then back to C:\ etc

Router is Huawei HG523a

any software firewall installed? Did avg have a firewall, or was it the free version

are there any remnants of avg found in startup when running msconfig

is the port light on where the pc's ethernet lead is plugged into the router

You've run the AVG remover?

Try a system Restore to before Sunday when AVG updated.

Otherwise, if you can transfer a log back and forth between computers...

Download Farbar's Service Scanner from the link below and save it to your desktop.

There you go
Avgfwfd(11)

AVG network filter service.

• Open Notepad
• Copy and Paste everything from the Code box into Notepad:
@echo off
sc Stop Avgfwfd
sc config Avgfwfd start= disabled
Del %0

• Make sure there are NO blank lines before @echo off
• Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.
• Go to File > Save As
• Save File name as fix.bat
• Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your desktop.
• Close Notepad
• Double-click fix.bat on your Desktop

Reboot and see if you connect to the internet.

When I do this a black box flashes up on the screen then disappears, I can't restart my computer as it stalls so I have turned it off and on again but I still can't get online.

Thank you for all your help, I have just managed to do it.

I put into google how to remove AVG network filter and the problem was in 'local area connection properties', the AVG network filter drive was checked and it said to uncheck it, I did and within a few minutes I was back online on my tower pc.

Once again thank you for your help, it was greatly appreciated.
