Yes there are cheaper or even free alternatives but you have to be in range of their Wi-Fi hotspot. Presumably as you are at friends home you are using someone's BT Fon hotspot. It also cheaper to buy a package from 90 minutes upwards. Or use a mobile as above or a 3G SIM card and dongle.

If you are doing this regularly then I'd be considering buying one. They can be purchased for around £50...or about 4.5 hours of access at 18p/min. You could just get a 3G dongle which can be picked up for about £10 but I find the phone much easier to use. You can put it on the window sill to get the best 3G signal. I've also broken a few dongles in my time.

You can use an Ovivo SIM to get some free access each month.

BT Fon is now known as BT Wi-Fi.

So buy a package not pay buy the minute.

You can buy 24 hours unlimited access for £9.99 or 90 mins in 24 hours for £5.99 both would be cheaper than 18ppm

Stay at home use your own broadband.
  • I have a Fon router which gives me access to the Fon network (BT is the UK partner). There are no ongoing costs - but you rarely find a Fon hotspot where you need one!
