Please be nice with me!
I think the OP's thread is great and a good idea to get more useful information, but after reading more than 20 replies, I have only found 4 proper responses:
1) can't get home insurance
2) get emotional with ups and downs
3) Some work not allowed to do
4) to get file deleted from agencies
Could we all please keep this Thread for useful information only? I am sorry if this "suggestion" may cause inconvenience or disgust to anyone. I'm just trying to make a point here. Many good threads like this end up with other moneysavers saying hello to one or another or many understandable replies. Someone should probably open a thread about this.
Thanks to all.0 -

thanks for your reply. I've just looked through the thread and can't really see what you mean. Perhaps you could point out which ones you think fail to offer support or information useful to the OP? People may be repeating the same ideas, but that doesn't make their opinion any less valid.BCSC Member 70:j

i'd agree with past posters...the range of emotions you go through you cant really describe & the elation after everything is done is amazing..the letters & phonecalls will stop eventually from creditors, I still though receive regular contact from one of my creditors, started making it into a little game now though seeing how long I can keep em on the phone on hold for before they put the phone down!!
)
I lurked around here for a while didn't really know anything about bankrupcy and what it involved & after loosing my job through Ill health & realising the only way to sort the mess i'd found on my hands was to go BR, I did the usual route ignored the letters hoped things would "go away" but they didn't and at one stage when things got so bad ended up in hospital after a botched suicide attempt...mad I know all for debt of £11,300, you think your alone in all this YOU ARE NOT there are other people who went through the same thing...I'm glad now I did what I did sure BR is not the easy way out people seem to think it is but it's an answer to an end.
These guys here are amazing they gave me some of the best support I ever needed & now the futures bright!!We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0 -

Ditto Neko.
What exactly quantifies a 'proper response'?
I responded, that I wish I had known earlier that it was possible/available, and had not realised until I had sought professional advice.
Clearly in your eyes, I am not responding appropriately. Forgive me, but why? I think it is good for people to read that, actually had it been available I'd have done it sooner.
My response indicates that it was the right step for me and was much easier than struggling with out of control debts. If you would prefer more specific answers, then by all means start your own thread and indicate exactly what responses you would like, and I will avoid cluttering up your thread with useless posts.

There's a lot that I wish I'd known (how easy it can be) and a lot that I learned.
It's a bit of a long one but my story is here:

If anyone can benefit from my story then good.
Good luck Claire and anyone else considering this big step!0 -
Hi Claire
i was declared bankrupt on 7th March this year, I still don't know if I have done the right thing!!!! I will admit that it has stopped the sleepless nights with worry about how I would pay the next bill, but I am still waiting for that moment of elation, I was told by many people it would come when I left court, but it didn't. I think the emotions (sorry for keep repeating the same stuff as others) were a big shock to me and wish I had been told about the ups and downs rather than just the ups!
I had a debt adviser through my local council who filled in my forms for me and she even came to court with me, which was fantastic to have somebody there, but I wish I had spoken to a few more advisers beforehand just to understand a bit more about it. Mind you, this site helped me loads, I was able to read lots of helpful comments.
One thing that did surprise me is one of my closest friends, or so called friend, she had encouraged me to get advice and do whatever I could to manage my debt. When I told her the court case was booked, she got quite nasty about it and I had comments such as 'Why do I bother going to work and paying my bills on time' so needless to say we no longer speak, I know people are entitled to their opinions but from friends I expected support. HOWEVER, in the grand scheme of things, I am glad I have done it.
I didn't know at the time of going bankrpt though that i would probably have to pay an amount each month so my debt adviser wasn't that great!!! It's not a huge amount and not forever.
Funny thing is though, I still have questions now about the next stage, so I don't think the questions ever stop - or maybe that's just me, my brother tells me I worry for the sake of worrying so who knows!!
Sorry for waffling on!!0 -
Pickle, I understand where you're coming from on the sleepless nights thing. I didn't sleep much better after my hearing than I did before, because I knew I still had the OR interview to come & I was dreading it. It was only after that happened that my overall well-being improved. Not for one second though have I regretted going BR. I haven't had a letter or call from a creditor in a month, & any unsolicited mail has been to sell me something. All my bills are paid & are paid on time.

As for your friend's reaction, don't worry about it. If she was a real friend, she'd have been glad that you'd found a solution that suited your situation. I think that for every person who criticises people who go BR, there are a fair number of them who are too gutless to do it, who would rather pretend that they're coping with their own debts when in reality they're doing just what you did (robbing Peter to pay Paul, living off credit cards etc). I also have to pay an IPA each month (mine's £50), but given that I was trying (& failing) to pay hundreds more than that each month plus had illness & the stress to worry about, the £50 will be going with my best wishes & a firm smile on my face.

Hi skaboy,
Ive just read your story and just wanted to say thanks, I was going to post a thread asking what actually happens on the day, I think you ve answered most of my questions!
Just wondering tho, I rang the county court today and asked, they said the process would take 2 hours on the day of bankruptcy, does anyone know why it takes so long? I thought it would be just to see the judge on the day and anything further would be followed up over the next couple of weeks afterwards.Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -

Hi Claire
All courts work slightly differently. Some advise the whole day.
We turned up at 9.30am. Waited 1 hr (ish). Then the clerk checked through our papers. This took ages and he was quite abrubt and not very nice. He went through each of our papers seperately, questioned various things, eventually stamped them. Then he had to verify that our Tax Credit award made us exempt from the court fee. Then we had to go back to the waiting room. We waited a further 45mins-hour, then the judge called me in, after 5mins she called my husband in. At around 11.22/23 we were declared bankrupt. Then we had to go back to the waiting room and wait for the OR to call. We waited a further hour and at 12.30 the OR called. We each spoke to the OR for about 10mins. He did a basic run through of what we should do while we waited for a letter confirming when our telephone interviews would be. He agreed I could withdraw benefits from the bank account and said he would fax them to allow the release of these funds.
Then we were free to go.
So 9.30am - 1pm for us.
On arrival we were told it would take 2 hours, but it took 3hours 30mins. (Although we only spent 7-8mins with the judge). A lot of it is waiting around.
But from what I read here everyone is different!
Our Bankruptcy date was 23rd March and our telephone interview with the OR was April 10th.
HTH
