Cancelling broadband

Morning all,
I am cancelling a broadband account I have held with Demon for the past 9 years. The account is used by my parents at their address (I've not lived there for many years) but now we are going to change the supplier so they are billed directly and get a better deal from another company with a router.
When I cancel, can another provider connect the new service immediately or is there some sort of handover period?

Is this affected by me cancelling and my parents opening an account? I.e. is the MAC transferrable between people?0 -
Yes, a MAC is linked to the phone number, not the name on the account. As long as the number is not changing, it will apply. No free lunch, and no free laptop

You should NOT cancel as doing so will get your broadband cancelled immediately, and you will be charged a disconnection fee (a BT charge), you should just ask for your MAC and pass that onto your new provider and let them deal with the migration.
Just cancelling will cause a delay (could be some days!) as your new provider will have to ask BT to re-provision your line again, with ensuing delay and cost.
If it is done correctly the changeover could be completed with a few hours or less down time !.0 -

Demon have a 30 day cancellation period so assume that this would just be one final fee to them after the migration? I.e. if 10 days til my next statement then I'd pay for 20 days worth?0 -
All cleared up...got the MAC so the 30 days notice period has started and will use it when transferring to Plusnet, who enable you to stipulate a migration date. Just going to set it for the start of June.
Thanks all - and I have used the thanks button

Remember the MAC is normally only valid for 30 days ! so you need to make sure your dates are going to work inside that period0
