If people are worried about the child losing their place after they've settled in then all the more reason to do it sharpish before they have a chance to settle in.

That isn't strictly true, certainly in my LEA you can apply for a primary school place near to an address of a childminder who will be taking a child to and from school if there is an established relationship.

And as OP isn't in possession of the full facts this may well be the case.

If that is the case then surely no harm done in reporting it? It will be checked and all will be fine, or not!

That's not how school admissions work. They ask for the home address, not the most convenient address.

They are potentially disadvantaging an innocent 4 year old child who is entitled to a place, fair and square.

Do you advocate the misuse of other public services too?

That is hardly what I said or implied. What I hinted at was whether the child does actually live with the grandmother for part of the week. If the child genuinely lives at the two addresses 50:50, then I believe the rules allow for the parent to put the closer address.

I know someone who was in this position years ago. The child was looked after by their grandparents during the working week. The grandparents lived on the doorstep of the best (thus obviously over-subscribed) primary school in the country, the mother did not. The grandparents address was used for the school application. There was outrage at the time because it would appear to have been orchestrated, but the child was never removed from the school.

The other key thing to bear in mind is that we don't have all the information. Is this mother so daft that she'd do something so naughty and then mention it where she could be overheard? If she's that bothered about a school place, I don't think she'd be this silly.

Strange how it varies between LEAS. Ours is VERY clear that an established relationship with childminder is not a good enough reason for school places.

OP - report to the office which deals with school places. Explain what you know, what you've heard. Then let them get on and do their job. But do it soon as the changes which may or may not result of what you report will affect family lives.
