Three nights in London.....

Hoping someone can help. I am looking at visiting London in May (possibly 11th) for three days. The train will be to Euston, so I am thinking about finding a hotel in that area.

I am not bothered about shopping, but would like to see places like houses of parliament, St Paul's, Covent Garden, maybe do a bus tour or walking tour, the usual sort of thing.

Where would be the best area to stay? Any recommendations on websites for a three night stay?

Thanks for any help.

  • I wish! I have seen that travelodge do rooms for around £50 a night, also heard that some places do 3 nights for 2 for £100 a night rooms, but can't remember for the life of me the name of the company.

I know for my budget I will not be near the centre of London, are there any areas on good transport links which would be suitable?

Follow the links in the thread I quoted. Imperial London Hotels, just south of KX and Euston. Close to Russell Square tube

Unfortunately you've left it a little late to get the best Travelodge deals, especially as you mention a Saturday stay. For future reference, if you plan a bit further ahead you should easliy be able to get a central Travelodge room for that budget (by booking well in advance ,for example I have six nights in Covent Garden booked for around £240 later this month).

General Travelodge tips are to book early and avoid Saturdays (if you are flexible on dates, the Euston Travelodge is currently showing up as £50 + £50 + £81 = £181 for the bank holiday Sun/Mon/Tue 26th-28th May).

One disadvantage of Travelodges is that they won't store luggage for you after checkout - but if you travel light, the British library is close to Euston and has lockers for a refundable deposit where you could leave a backpack for an afternoon.

I think the 3-4-2 link you refer to is likely to be Holiday Inn (ICG group) - I dont have it to hand but if you search this board you should be able to find it - it comes up quite frequently

You could try the Holiday Inn 35% off link for your dates.

On the outskirts of London but the Travelodge at Cricklewood would be within your budget at £64 for the Sat , £25 for Sunday 12th and £27 for Monday 13th (add to your basket one at a time to get this price as if you block book it charges highest price for all nights), it is around the croner from Cricklewood train station with trains to St Pancreas taking 15 mins. Buses go from in front of the hotel to Marble Arch or to Kilburn tube station. It would a 15-20 direct tube journey from Kilburn to Waterloo or Westminster for The London Eye, Big ben, Thames embankment, House of Parliament. 5 min involving one change at Green park to Covent Garden. Go on www.tfl.gov.uk and put in the Travelodge postcode to plan your journeys.
  • Thanks to all for your help. Don't need to include the Saturday, quite happy to go Monday to Thursday, seems a lot cheaper.

Is it easy to get across London on the tube etc when we get to Euston? Bit nervous of getting lost!

It really depends on exactly where you are going, but in general the tube is well signposted and easy to navigate. The one thing to bear in mind is that the unique design of the map means that places that look miles apart on the tube map may actually be close together (and vice versa) - so if you want to go somewhere in particular it's worth checking on a real scale map to see if there are other tube stations just that little bit further away that make the trip easier. As an example, if you want to go from Euston to some where that's on the circle line (like South Kensington for the Natural History, Science &V A Museums) then rather than start at Euston underground, you are probably better off leaving the station and crossing the road to Euston Square station.

Personally, although susancs is right in saying that you will get more choice of cheaper hotels outside of the central area, if you are jsut looking for a basic hotel, I'd say it's worth paying a little bit extra to stay fairly central, such as the Travelodges in Southwark, Waterloo, Covent Garden or Tower Bridge, where at least some of the sights are within walking distance. this means you can make better use of the time in the evenings by going for walks from the hotel, rather than get caught up in a lot of rush hour commuter traffic getting into and out of the centre - and it means you will save in tube andrail fares while there.

The signage, maps etc on the Tube are a model of clarity, in my view. You can pick up pocket-size maps at virtually any station, there's a PDF of the tube map at tfl.gov.uk.

From £50 - £92 per night, just South of Euston. http://www.imperialhotels.co.uk/
    - not luxurious by any means, but a functional place to lay your head.

It would be even cheaper if you went Sunday night onwards as usually Sundays are cheaper than other nights in London hotels.
