I think your Master Boot Record is corrupt. If you only want to use XP do the following found on another forum:

Boot from the windows XP CD (put the XP CD in the CD drive and reboot, it should then boot), press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the restoration console. Select your windows XP installation from the list, and enter the administrator password.
Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

I had to use this on a PC that I had corrupted the MBR with by using a boot manager.

Worked perfectly. This may have been posted before, and if so, forgive me. If not, now you know how to repair your MBR. By the way MBR stands for Master Boot Record.

If you don't have the XP cd you'll need a boot disk or a live unix cd to do anything. The root (hd0,0) is a GRUB command which basically tells it we're going to use the first partition of the first hard drive (where windows is probably installed). Chainloader +1 is required when booting windows to load the bootloader on the first sector. I suspect the problem is to do with the fact you have hd0.0 (with full stop). If you're presented with a GRUB command prompt you can try typing those commands in order along with "boot" to launch windows.

If no XP cd, you could try a win98se disk from bootdisk.com and type "fdisk /mbr" to set it to always boot into windows. If you want to fix grub you'd need a linux live cd and mount the linux partition, then try editing the grub config file.. probably somewhere in /boot/grub.

Alternatively, if you wish to reinstall GRUB back into the MBR you would need to run a few commands from the grub command prompt. Its probably something like "set(hd0)" but better to check on the web for exact syntax.

Or download and use the Super Grub cd.

I've used it countless times when installing Windows again and losing my boot options.

get a knoppix cd disk. (free off the net) and boot from that.
then you can repair the master boot record, or just remove/delete the linux OS and leave the just xp OS if desired.
    Get some gorm.
