We need a chimney hood for a 90cm hob with a very low ceiling - HELP!

Hi, our kitchen is a nightmare with a very low ceiling - 2.05m. We want to buy a range style cooker with a 90cm hob and want a 90cm width extractor hood above it. The chimney ones (which we think look nicest) adjust in height but even at shortest seem to be 56cm which brings it far to near to the hob. Conventional extractors appear uglier and even if we ignore this they seem to only be 60cm or 70cm width.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible to cut down a chimney hood or insert the top into the ceiling? By the way it would have to be a filter one as we cannot outside vent.
Thanks for any help!

Buy one that has a short chimney kit as an option like the Elica Aqua 60 for example. Yes I know thats a 600 - thats why I said for example.

    OR

Cut the top off - very carefully. Not recommended though.

    Cheers

I run a maintenance company and we fit a lot of kitchens. This is quite a common problem. I just take the chimney to be computer to a local metal fabricators and they cut it very neatly for the grand sum of £10.

Try a local metal fabricators and get them to cut it for you.

Having had the same problem a few houses back,I continued the coving from the kitchen wall units to make a pelmet feature and installed a flat built in extractor inc lights, vented behind cornice and out through side wall.Obviously you can use self circulating and just change filter pads more often.

Thank you. Sorry to be thick but I've googled the kit and can't work out exactly what it is. Does it mean you buy a chimney then a kit and throw the flue away or can you just get the bottom with a short kit? This seems very complicated but it may just be that I am stupid!!:o

what is the min distance req by your new range cooker ?

this distance will determine whether you have the height to even think about a chimney extractor hood
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Good question! We haven't bought yet, just chosen but the websites selling the cooker don't seem to specify this. We just measured and the shortest we could see (560mm) still would look ridiculous so we may need to rethink. Nothing is straightforward is it?!:D

it's got nothing what so ever to do with how it looks, all cookers/ranges/hobs will give a min distance to anything above it & if you haven't got that distance then the installer shouldn't fit it, I've lost count of the amount of customers that have had to remove the extractor or unit above before i will fit the hob, the british standard is min 760mm above the hob but most manu will allow less than that, so as i said you need to find out what this distance is for the range you intend to buy, before deciding on the extract

Get the bottom bit with a short kit. Alternatively, as Phil says, a long one can be cut down professionally but as SCRGI says it must be the correct height above the hob.

chimney can be cut down its the height from cooker to hood that's important ive just checked on screwfix they have a hood (59077)that needs a 70cm gap for gas and 66cm gap for electric so depending on what type of cooker you get depends on the gap you have.
