PC randomly restarts

Over the last few days my PC has been randomly restarting for apparantly no reason. I removed Norton via the Norton removal tool and installed Virgin media security suite, this could have something to do with the issue. Also the PC is very noisy with the fan running at full belt. The PC is a HP Compaq D6100X and is roughly 18 months old. Any ideas?

Is there any kind of blue screen error before it restarts or any other kind of warning before it happens?

  • Hi,

could be caused by overheating, and that is why fan is going full belt, it shuts down before it does too much damage, and allows it to cool a bit. Can you feel any heat on the casing?

    Hi
I am having the same problem, randomly restarts, also sometimes it freezes and have to manually restart.

superscaper - yes some times when it restarts there is a blue screen that does a disk check? other times this doesn't happen and it goes straight to the log in screen.

I am also using virgin media PC guard and have done for at least 18 mths with no probs.

No warning of shut down. The casing is not hot at all. Could use the windows firewall but nervous as this also has anti-virus and spyware protection.

kha - once pc's get to about 18 months/2 years old, it's really time to start thinking about backing up and reinstalling.

The OP's sounds a bit different, it does sound like it's overheating. It's not a laptop that you actually use on your lap is it? That's pretty a common problem. If it's a desk top pc, then take the casing off and hoover it all out, dust makes them run hot.

oops should have mentioned that I meant using pc guard - didn't mean literally running it for that long:o

    reinstalled about 3-4 months ago

had problem for about 2-3 weeks - prob should have done something about it sooner but only found this site 3 days ago - my DH has become an MSE widow ever since LOL:rotfl:

It sounds like you've got a conflict going on kha. Unfortunately there's only one way to deal with something like that, you'll need to painstakingly uninstall everything - one at a time - and reboot every time you've uninstalled something to see if the problem has gone. If you can remember what you installed at the time the problem started, then try uninstalling that first.

Before you do that, just in case it's malware, start in safe mode and run hijackthis - and as many spyware and antivirus programmes as you have to hand. Don't forget to update the programmes first. If you find any problems, deal with them and then run the programme that found it a second time, just to make sure.

When the problem started happening did you upgrade anything at the time.

The fan belt bit really sounds like overheating. Have you checked the chip temp in the bios?

I very much doubt his computer has a fan belt, unless he built it from a car engine. :D
