BA refusal of refund

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice. We went to antigua last year and our flight was delayed due to the pilot being ill. Due to this delay it meant that we missed our connecting flight in gatwick to belfast and when we asked BA to help us they said it wasnt their problem as our flight from gatwick to belfast was not booked through BA. This meant that we had to go to another airline and pay an extra £350 to get home. I connected BA to ask about a refund and they said that we were not entitled to it under the EU regulations as it was circumstances outside their control. Is this correct and am i not entitled to a refund.
thanks

try reading the FAQs...you seem to be mixing 'refund' and 'compensation'
If your ticket to Belfast was a separate booking then BA are not responsible (this is a risk and gamble you take when booking separate tickets)
If your flight from Antigua was over 3 hours late, try posting on the BA thread
If it was less than 3 hours there is no compensation due0 -

If it was as late as this you have my sympathy0 -
It sounds like the connection was a separate ticket - which means no EU 261 compensation or that. But were you not able to claim on your travel insurance?
if the flight into London was more than 3 hours late, it sounds like you have a claim for that part of the leg - €600 per person.0 -
