Personally, I would not recommend Silestone to my worst enemy...Nor some of their accredited fabricators and installers.
And why is that? I have Silestone, it looks excellent, and it was very well templated and fitted. I know someone else who is similarly happy, and there are many positive reviews for the people I used.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
I know this is a how long is a piece of string. We are considering getting a new work top in our kitchen and a new hob and sink. Units are 12 years old and is a Symphony kitchen, it was an upgraded one from what was supposed to be fitted in our house. I think 18mm cabinets rather than 15mm and hinges that went all the way back - a bit vague I know but also included down lighters etc
I still like the kitchen but at the time chose the addition of a wooden edging to the worktops and this is what is looking a bit tired.
We are getting John Lewis in to quote as they will project manage everything, we may have to have electrical work done as going from gas hob to induction and may not have a big enough fuse set up.
We are looking at having Corian worktops and have already been quoted approx £3800 just for the worktops and sink with them. Just considering whether if the price rises much more whether it would be better to go for a complete new kitchen.
We have 10 base level cupboards, 8 eye level and one pan drawer plus various display shelving (which I hate with a passion) plus extra in the untility. If we went for a new kitchen this would probably mean re-tiling kitchen floor (currently ceramic tiles which cost us about £1800 12 years ago).
Just wondering what ball park figures people have paid for their new kitchens, especially interested to hear for people who have John Lewis fit their kitchens.
Will you be happy spending such a large sum on worktops, in a 12 year old kitchen which will still have shelving that you hate?
Can the electrics for your hob be upgraded without too much disruption to existing wall tiling/decoration?
From personal experience, I would have thought £3.8k for Corian is very reasonable. £10k definitely isn't.
If you do go with Corian, be careful about your colour choice. It isn't recommended in the darker colours due to scratching being more visible.0 -
The original quote was from a local company who sell and fit Corian, they buy it in enormous sheets and then template and fit etc.
They said that the uplifts T the back could be made from off cuts and that it would all be bonded in - no seams etc. John Lewis said you had to have specific pieces for the up lift and that was nearly an extra £800. They gave us two prices, one from a group 1 and one from a group 4, I think the one we had identified with the original company was group 3, however may rethink as it is a dark colour and we have taken on board the scratch comments.
My friend has said the same thing do we really want to pay out even £4k possibly £6 by the time you add in the new sink, hob, possibly tiles and electrical work.
John Lewis said a ball park figure for our kitchen would be £30k and £20k if we went for their standard range (which happen to be Symphony kitchens but a lower grade than our existing kitchen ie veneered doors as opposed to the solid wood that we have)
We are now even thinking of just replacing it with another Formica worktop, it needs replacing because it is damaged near the sink due to a leak.£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far
+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.
Terramundi weighs 8lb 5oz0 -
I've been quoted £20k from a local reputable independant kitchen retailer. My kitchen is 13ft x 19ft.
Schuller C2 (German) units x 20 = £10k (includes 20% discount)
7 x Siemens appliances, undermount sink & tap = £5k (includes 25% discount)
Silestone worktop (price group 3) = £3,265 (6.5 metres)
Installation = £1,587
Waiting for 2 other quotes to come in, from independant retailers.0 -

Silestone are a nightmare company to deal with. Utter contempt for the the end user, that is the customer who ultimately is paying. Plus, inadequate training, monitoring and enforcement of even the fundamentals on fitting their products.
With Silestone the ethos is the end user will receive whatever standard their accredited fitters install, regardless of how low, or bad, this standard is. Woe betide any end user who complains to Silestone. They will be belittled, bluffed, blagged...and treated like a fool.
The Silestone approach is "fools and their money are easily parted". "You were a fool to buy our product, now clear off".
This is not a rant. There is some good template and fitting undertaken - but this is no reflection on Silestone who, as a company, have abysmal standards.
My comments come from one who has experience of trying to work with Silestone!0
