It's only a few years ago that there were so many Easter eggs available that the shops had about half of them left to sell off cheap after Easter.

Calm down dear, it's only chocolate.

My local Tesco and Asda ran out Fri/Sat so about right with something that is very difficult to predict, I was looking at all the Christmas tat they were still trying to shift last week. I suppose they could have made a bit more profit if they had more stock as they were charging silly prices, medium eggs £1.50 each when we paid £2.00 for 3 a few weeks ago.

I think the shops are getting a bit canny here. They used to have loads left after Easter (same with Christmas cakes after Christmas ) and have to sell them half price. They seem to err on the other side now and not order enough.

It's not nearly as simple as you seem to think.

It's a complex equation based on full price profit margin, reduced profit margin (or loss) on remainders, and the probability of running out at various times.

For example, it's far better to lose £10 on remaindered stock than lose the profit on several dozen eggs because you run out.

The most successful retailers are the ones who manage to get this difficult balance correct.
    . :)

Oversimplified maybe but a guide to the type of decision that has to be made.

And I'd suggest that no retailer gets the balance right all of the time - obviously some are better than others

You've missed a major business principle there if they over order on Easter eggs and have some left now they're stuffed!

Easter eggs are always the sort of thing you want to sell out of or you risk a loss due to heavy discounting to get rid of the things.

The ones who ran out yesterday/today got it right, they won't be whinging about unexpectedly poor sales, they'll be happy with their foresight and good profit margins!

Maybe you should learn more about how to run a retail business rather than assuming!
It's up to the shop to decide whether they want to offer things for sale or not.

If there are lots of people asking for them then they have a load of missed sales and plainly got it wrong.

If they sold out yesterday (or before) then they didn't have as much stock as they could have sold.

Maybe you should think about what the business of a shop is.

I've thought about it, and their mission is to sell goods and to make a profit.

    No sale = no profit.

Yes but the argument on the other side is too much stock means a loss which is worse than no profit!

  • Most stores could not give a toss if a few people left it too late to buy eggs - they would much rather sell out at full price than be left with loads of stock to reduce !

I run a shop that has delivered double digit year on year growth and is in the top 5% of the company in terms of profitablilty. I know what I'm doing thanks :)
