Blocking spam calls on an iPhone

Hi guys I just signed up to MSE. I'm not sure if I've posted in the right section but mods please feel free to move it if I haven't.

Right, the reason for my thread is because I keep getting spam calls to my mobile (iPhone) on a daily basis, pretty much twice or three times a day.

It only seems to ring for about 3 seconds and then they hang up, they don't ever leave a voicemail or anything. I don't want to change my phone number, so are there any other ways I can block them from calling me all the time?

Thanks!

B.

Don't know how iphones work - but if you have number of the calling number, report the number to the ICO - http://www.ico.org.uk/for_the_public/topic_specific_guides/marketing/calls.

I have had to do the same recently been getting PPI idiots calling and texts

Thanks OneADay. I've currently got my number registered with the TPS - well I registered it a few years ago, not sure if I need to re-register every so often, or whether I should just go ahead and report it to the ICO anyway?

TPS I think works for landline numbers but for mobiles, it probably won't do anything. I choose to keep a record of the calls I get and save texts too. I collated about 5 different numbers, 08 and 07 numbers and reported them all to the ICO.

Hopefully ICO can track down the network, find out who is sending them or as a minimum force the network to disable those numbers.

iPhone like many smartphones, probably has some app to block unwanted calls/texts. So best to just search for an app on iApp or whatever iphone site is called :-).

My funky HTC actually has inbuilt call/text blocker :-)

There are apps that you can get on the AppStore to block numbers. You can go the TPS/ICO route but this will have no effect on autodiallers and overseas callers.

Have you tried calling the number back? I've found the best way to tackle spam calls when I have the time is to call back and tell them that unless my number is removed from their system then I will call them back (using my free minutes and assuming it isn't a premium rate number)10 times for each time they call. When the same operator answered my call 5-6 times in a row and I left the phone off the hook she knew I meant business and I got no more calls.

The only way to tackle spam calls is to have a mindset change from being annoyed to wasting their time if you have the time and inclination to do it. If everyone who received a spam call made up false details of an accident or fake PPI claim for a couple of minutes and then put the phone down, then their systems won't cope and they won't make money. :D

Are there any recommended apps (free or paid) that are good for that purpose?
