Life expectancy of a tyre?

I have a 1.25 Fiesta 08 plate and took it for an mot this week. The front tyres had worn and it stated there is 0.3mm useable tread left on both. The rear tyres are fine. I decided to get it over and done with and have 2 new tyres. My car has only done 12,683 miles and I am thinking of writing to Ford as I would have expected them to last longer - the tyres that have worn are Continental. Just wondered if anyone else has had any problems with tyres on a Fiesta? Thanks in advance.

there are so many factors that can determine the lifespan of your tyres, on a fwd car it's normal that these tyres will wear faster, driving style comes into it too, speed, inflation etc etc can all have an impact - I wouldn't bother writing to ford!

12.5k is not outside the normal life expectancy of front tyres, low yes but not unusual.

My last 2 sets of tyres have lasted 45k and 15k miles. Difference being that the first set were kept at the correct pressure and used for long motorway trips driven at stead speeds. Second set on the used car I bought were worn on both inside and outside edges, with the tyres at much too low pressure from an owner who did lots of short trips.

Both figures are reasonable given their use.

    Did you rotate the tyres?

Did you get the tracking checked?

Also if the spare is not a space saver then you could get that swapped over and only need to buy one tyre.

    Thanks for your replies.

I didnt rotate my tyres, sounds a good idea. Now the 2 new tyres are on, the tracking has been checked and it is fine. I did ask about using the spare but it was a space saver so it couldnt go on the car. I have had 2 Goodyear Efficient Grip at £68 each. There was a special offer on for March £10 cashback on each tyre on a gift card for Tesco and can be used for fuel or groceries.

That's a fairly normal amount for a front wheel drive car. Had to replace front tyres on a Focus after 12,000 miles as well.

I have found continentals to be one of the worst premium brands for getting decent mileage from.

Having said that the least miles I have ever had from front tyres on a front wheel drive is about 18000, continentals, on a focus.

The last few sets I had on the Focus were Avons which done around 26000.

the ones on my Kia havent been changed yet and that has done 26000 from new but cant remember whats on there

12k is normal for Continentals. If you want longevity then go for Michelin Energy tyres, but at the expense of outright grip. We get 30k on Michelin Energy/Primacys
