    Great stuff.

If you don't get any joy with the bank OR the ombudsman, you might get a solicitor who's willing to act for you pro bono. It'll be tough to find someone who will, but this reeks of injustice so I'm sure somebody will be willing to.
Thanks Mattye, sorry I've never had to do anything like this better, please explain pro bono for me?

Dad's got a letter from Santander apologising for their mistake in closing his account and they've paid him £275 in compensation. He's gone into the branch today and obtained copies of all the documents they have on his acct (which is the same paperwork I have really, because they have no signed withdraw slip to close the account), so we have this for the solicitor as well.

Pro bono means they'll work for free or at a reduced rate if they think its a worthy cause and the only thing you usually have to pay are any costs incurred by the solicitor. For example, land registry fees with conveyancing.

pro bono means for free (strictly "for the public good"). Unless you find a solicitor with a crusade to take on Santander, its unlikely. You may however get someone to do the work for free and take a cut of the damages if they win the case for you.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

This is going to take a long time to resolve

Get another bank account elsewhere double quick. This might have to be a basic account. It doesn't matter.

The second you know your new account number and sort code call everyone who pays you money, ask them to make all future deposits into the new account, and anyone you have direct debits with too to move them over.

This will allow you to resolve your complaint with Santander with less pressure. There's no way you're going to get this resolved quickly.

Thanks Izools, lucky I've done all those things.

They probably won't take eight weeks to respond, that's just the amount of time you have to give them before going to the Ombudsman unless you've received a final response before that as previously mentioned.

Get the written complaint in ASAP.
I've received a letter from the Ombudsman yesterday. I didn't realise by contacting them they've opened a complaint against Santander and they write to Santander now and tell them about the complaint. Santander then have 8 weeks from the start to sort it out.

Hopefully that will put some more pressure on them.
